Microwave noise splits neatly into two classes: mechanical noise from the turntable and the cooling fan, which is harmless and often fixable in minutes, and electrical noise from the transformer, which is not. Causes in order of likelihood
- Turntable roller ring and drive coupling — First, and it accounts for most noise complaints. The ring runs in a track full of food debris and the coupling wears, so the plate wobbles, catches and grinds — all of which is visible and reachable inside the cavity.
- Plate or roller ring not seated — Second. A plate that has been put back off-centre rattles against the cavity, which sounds far worse than it is and is fixed in seconds.
- Cooling fan obstruction or bearing wear — Third. A fan that has picked up grease and dust runs rough; a blocked vent makes it work harder and louder.
- Transformer or magnetron noise — Fourth, and the only one on this list that is serious. It is distinguishable because it happens only while the oven is heating and it changes character as the oven ages.
What to check first, second, third
- Run the oven with the turntable and ring removed — If the noise disappears, it is mechanical and it is in front of you. This is the fastest test available.
- Note whether the noise happens only while heating — Heating-only noise is the transformer; constant noise is the fan or the turntable.
- Check the vents for grease and blockage — A restricted airflow path makes the fan loud and makes the oven run hot.
