Avanti Dishwasher: Odor or Mold
A dishwasher smells because food residue is sitting somewhere it cannot dry out — the filter, the sump, or the door seal. This page takes the same fault from a different starting point: not which subsystem is likeliest on an Avanti dishwasher, but when the trouble started. This is a compact cabinet with very little air around its condenser, so clearance and ventilation outrank component failure. What you are actually seeing
- Check your symptom against this list first.

- Standing water in the sump between cycles.
- Black or pink film in the door seal or around the filter.

Causes, grouped by when it started
- One entry per onset pattern first — the strongest candidate for each way this fault can begin on an Avanti dishwasher — and the remainder after them. Read the label, find the pattern that matches yours, and start there rather than at the top.
- Drain hose without a high loop, letting waste smell back in — Why: Without a high loop or an air gap, waste water and drain odours sit against the machine. What to check, and in what order
- This order follows the onset groups above, so it is deliberately different from the companion page. Neither is wrong; they are two routes through one fault.
- Pin down when it started and whether it happens every time. — Why: A fault that appeared between one use and the next has a different cause set from one that crept up over months, and this answer alone removes most of the list.
- Lift the filter out and look underneath it. — Why: It is the most common source, it is designed to come out, and it takes five minutes.
- Wipe the door lip and the seal all the way round. — Why: It is the second reservoir, entirely outside the spray pattern, and almost never cleaned.

Switch off the dishwasher at its breaker before reaching into the sump; many machines are hard-wired with no plug to pull, and broken glass often collects in the filter well — wear gloves. Where the owner checks end
Call a technician when one of these is true, and not before.
When the smell returns within days of a full filter, seal and hot-cycle clean. When there is standing dirty water in the sump between cycles. When the smell is of drains rather than food, which points at the drain connection.
