In short, on SLTW models
On an Avanti SLTW washer "will not drain" and "will not spin" are the same complaint. The control refuses to spin until the water is gone, so a blocked pump path presents as a failed spin and owners chase the wrong part. Clear the path first and the spin usually returns with it.
What the owner sees
- Water is still in the drum when the cycle ends — On an SLTW model, standing water at the end is the definition of the fault — the question is only where the path blocked.
- It drains but very slowly — On this family, slow drainage is the same fault caught early, and it is much easier to clear now.
- Water comes back into the drum after it has emptied — On SLTW models in particular, water returning is an installation question rather than a pump one.
- The pump hums but nothing moves — On the SLTW models listed below, hum without drainage points at a foreign object in the pump rather than at a dead motor.
- The drum will not spin even when empty — On an SLTW model, an empty drum that refuses to spin is not a drainage complaint at all.
- NEAR MISS — it drains fine but stops mid-cycle — Then the drain path is healthy and something else is halting the cycle; read the cycle-fault page.
What actually fails on SLTW models, in order
- A blocked pump filter or coin trap — It leads because it is the one part of the drain path the maker intends the owner to open, and because most machines that will not drain have nothing else wrong.
- A foreign object jamming the pump impeller — It sits here because the symptom — a hum with no flow — is distinctive and the access is through the filter housing. It is ranked the same way on every SLTW model.
- A missing or collapsed high loop in the drain hose — Without a rise above the water level in the drum the hose siphons, and the machine can empty itself into the drain or refill from it.
- A control or wiring fault at the pump circuit — It comes last because every mechanical cause above presents identically and costs almost nothing to eliminate. The SLTW models in the table below are no exception.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the pump filter and empty it — On the SLTW line, this is the first and most productive check on the page, and it is designed to be done by hand.
- With the filter out, turn the impeller by hand — Machine unplugged, fingers gentle — blades are thin and sharp-edged.
- Test the household drain with a bucket of water — If the standpipe cannot take a bucket quickly, the machine was never the problem.
- Start a drain or spin and listen at the pump — On the SLTW models listed below, a hum with no flow is a jam; silence is a pump, a control or a fuse.
Read this before you start
Safety
Unplug the washer before you open the filter — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the pump can start while your fingers are in the housing. Expect water: empty the drum as far as you can first, put towels down, and work with a tray in place. Leave the door latch and the lid switch exactly as built.

When this stops being an owner job
Hand it over once the drain path is proved clear and the fault persists, and tell the technician what the pump does at the drain step — hum or silence. That single observation points either at the pressure and control side or at the pump motor, and it saves a diagnostic visit.
