The RMS answer in short
Water under an Avanti RMS refrigerator is usually condensate that has lost its way out, not a burst pipe. The defrost drain blocks, the pan overflows or the water finds a path down the back wall instead of into the tray. Trace the water to its highest point before assuming anything is broken.
What you notice first
- Damp along the door edge with a dry floor — Within the RMS family, condensation on a cool surface rather than a leak, and on a humid day it means nothing.
- Water inside, under the crisper drawers — Where RMS models are concerned, the defrost drain is backing up into the cabinet before it ever reaches the floor.
- Droplets on the inside of the rear wall — Across the RMS line, normal on a humid day in a cabinet that is opened often; a problem only when it runs rather than beads.
- A clean, clear puddle that returns within hours — On RMS models in particular, fast refilling means a supply line, not condensate — condensate arrives slowly.
- Water pooling on the floor of the cabinet, under the crisper — On the RMS models listed below, that is the classic blocked defrost drain: melt water backs up and runs forward instead of down.
- NEAR MISS — a steady drip with the machine switched off — A machine that is off is simply defrosting. Empty it, dry it and judge it once it has been running again for a day.
What actually fails on RMS models, in order
- A blocked defrost drain — First and by a wide margin: the drain hole is small, it sits in a cold damp place, and it silts up with food debris and then freezes.
- A leaking ice-maker or dispenser fill line — Mid-list because it is less common than condensate, but it is the one cause that can flood a room, so it is checked early. On the RMS models below the ranking is the same.
- A drain pan that has overflowed or shifted — It belongs here because it is visible from the front with the plinth off and because seating it is free.
- A perished or disconnected drain tube — Last of the common causes: the tube hardens with age, cracks at the bend, or falls out of the pan when the machine is pushed back. The same order applies across the RMS family.
Where to start, and what follows
- Find the highest point the water reaches — On RMS models, dry everything, put kitchen paper at likely points and come back: the first sheet to wet tells you where to look.
- Put kitchen paper down and find the highest wet point — On RMS models, water runs downhill, so the top of the trail is closest to the source.
- Clear the drain channel at the back of the cabinet — In the RMS family, the channel and the hole at the bottom of it are where defrost melt is supposed to leave.
Before you take any panel off
Safety
Water and a mains appliance together are the hazard here: switch the refrigerator off at its plug or breaker and dry the floor before you kneel in it — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If water has reached a socket or the cabinet wiring, leave it off and call rather than drying it and carrying on.

When to hand it over
Call when the drain channel and tube are clear, the pan is seated, the seal passes a paper test, the unit is level and any supply connection is dry — and water still appears. What is left is the tube inside the insulation or a fill valve, and both mean the unit comes apart.
