What this usually is on RMS cabinets
On the RMS group most noise complaints resolve to contact rather than to a failing part: a cabinet not sitting square, a drain pan loose on its bracket, or tubing resting against sheet metal. All three are checkable with the machine isolated and no panel off. A fan blade striking ice is the common exception and it announces itself by being intermittent.
The observable symptoms
- A single knock when the machine starts or stops — The compressor moving on its mounts as the load comes on or off.
- A whine that has built up over weeks rather than appearing overnight — A bearing drying out gives exactly that slow onset.
- A click or a clunk every few minutes — Regular, brief, and unrelated to whether the door is open — a switching noise rather than a mechanical one.
- NEAR MISS — the noise arrived with water on the floor — Noise plus water is a drain or a pan problem first and a noise problem second, and the leak article covers it properly.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Cabinet touching a wall, a counter or another appliance — Anything the cabinet touches becomes part of the instrument. A unit set into a recess or pushed against a dishwasher transmits its normal running noise into a much larger surface, and the complaint is a machine that suddenly got loud without anything failing. First on this family because it needs nothing taken apart — on a cabinet this size it is a look and a listen, and excluding it costs less than five minutes.
- Drain pan loose, warped or resting off its bracket — The pan sits over the compressor where it is both hot and in the vibration path. Ranked second because it explains the cases the first cause does not, and because on this family the two are checked from the same side of the cabinet.
- Tubing or a wire resting against the cabinet — The suction line and the capillary run close to sheet metal, and a line that has been nudged during a move can end up touching it. Third: real, but it usually announces itself with something the first two causes do not produce, so the earlier checks will have already pointed at it.
Work through it in this order
- Start with the sound, not the part — Name whether it is continuous, intermittent or periodic before you look at anything. On RMS that single decision removes most of the list below.
- Pull the cabinet clear of everything it touches — Even a finger's width of air changes the sound if contact is the cause.
- Look at the pan with the machine isolated — It should sit square and hold still when you press it. A pan that moves under a finger is the rattle.
- Look along the tubing at the back for a contact point — A bright rubbed mark on the metal says where. Do not bend the tubing; note it for the technician.
Isolate the machine first
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.

The line between a fix and a service call
The line on this family is the panel: everything above it is owner work, and the moment a diagnosis needs the freezer rear panel off or a meter on a winding, it is a service call. Call immediately if the breaker trips again after a reset, if the cord or plug is warm to the touch, or if you see oil anywhere on the tubing.
