The short answer for RMRC models
On an RMRC cabinet the defrost drain is the first suspect for any water found inside, and it is also the one an owner can often clear. Before that, though, check the cabinet is level and that the door is closing, because both misdirect condensate and both are free to fix.
What you actually observe
- Water on the kitchen floor at the front of the cabinet — Either the pan has overflowed or cracked, or condensate is running down the outside of the door.
- It only leaks after the cabinet has been filled — A packed compartment blocks the channel that carries melt to the drain.
- A layer of ice under the bottom drawer — Water sitting in the channel and freezing where the air is coldest.
- NEAR MISS — water plus a new rattle from underneath — A pan that has shifted makes noise and spills at the same time, and both stop when it is seated properly.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Cabinet not level, so condensate runs the wrong way — The channels inside a refrigerator rely on a slight tilt backwards to work. It heads the list on RMRC because it is not really a fault of the machine: it is where the machine has been put, and that is free to change.
- Drain pan cracked, displaced or overflowing — The pan sits over the compressor so its heat can evaporate what collects. It ranks second on RMRC rather than first only because the cause above it is quicker to exclude, not because it is rarer.
- Water supply line, its connection or the fill valve — Only models plumbed for water have this cause at all, and where it exists it is the one that matters most: a supply leak is continuous rather than cyclic and it does not stop on its own. Third, and only on the models of this family that carry the fitting at all — on the rest of the five codes it is not a candidate.
The diagnostic order
- Dry everything first — You cannot tell a new leak from an old puddle. Dry the floor and the inside, then come back in a day and look at what has returned and where.
- Check the cabinet sits square and slightly back — A spirit level across the top, or a door that swings open on its own, tells you in seconds.
- Pull the cabinet out and look at the pan — It should sit square on its bracket and be damp rather than brimming. Note whether it is cracked or merely displaced.
- If the cabinet is plumbed, dry the fitting and watch it — A fitting that is wet again within minutes is the leak. Close the shutoff before doing anything else.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and on a refrigerator the compressor circuit stays live for as long as the plug is in.

Where the owner fix stops
Call if the list above runs out without a cause, and call first rather than last if the fault involves water near live parts, a breaker that will not stay in, or a burning smell. An RMRC cabinet is small enough that a technician confirms most of these in a single visit, so there is little value in a long owner diagnosis once the cheap causes are excluded.
