An OR unit that hums, runs and stays warm has usually stopped moving heat rather than stopped pumping it. The cause is normally on the outside of the cabinet — dust, clearance, or a door that no longer pulls shut — and only then on the inside. Working the list from the outside in is what keeps this a short job.
How the fault presents
- The back or the side of the cabinet is hot rather than warm — The condenser is trying to shed heat into air that is not moving past it.
- The top shelf is noticeably warmer than the bottom one — Cold air is not being circulated, so it settles instead of mixing.
- A sheet of frost on the back wall of the freezer section — Not the usual light dusting but a solid layer, which blocks the air path rather than cooling it.
- NEAR MISS — only the ice is soft and everything else is fine — A freezer section that is merely too warm while the fridge section is right is a control or damper question, not a cooling failure.
Causes in likelihood order on this model group
- Evaporator or condenser fan not running — Either fan stopping produces a warm cabinet: without the evaporator fan the cold stays on the coil, and without the condenser fan the heat stays in the coil. On OR this is where to start, because the alternative first checks all need the cabinet moved or a panel off and this one does not.
- Door seal not sealing, or the door not pulling itself shut — A gasket that has taken a set, a door that has dropped on its hinge, or a shelf holding the door open by a fraction all let room air in faster than the machine can take heat out. Second on this family: it produces the same complaint as the cause above it, so the two have to be separated before either is acted on.
- Thermostat, sensor or control set wrong or reading wrong — A dial knocked to its warmest position, or a sensor reading colder than the cabinet really is, both stop the machine asking for cold. Ranked third here, because the two causes above it are both quicker to settle and more often the answer on a cabinet of this size.
The order of checks, and why it is this one
- The order for this model group — It is set by access rather than by likelihood alone: on OR the first checks are the ones the cabinet lets you make from where it stands.
- Listen at the cabinet for each fan in turn — The condenser fan runs whenever the compressor does; the evaporator fan stops with the door switch, so hold the switch in to hear it.
- Close the door on a strip of paper and pull — Do it at four points around the frame. A strip that slides out without resistance is the leak.
- Check the setting, then watch whether the machine cycles — Set it to the middle of the range and see whether the compressor responds within a few minutes.
Safety before diagnosis
Safety
Isolate first: unplug the machine, or switch off the breaker if the socket is behind the cabinet. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.

When to call a technician
Book a technician once the checks above come back clean, and book one straight away if any of three things is true: the compressor is hot and silent, the breaker will not hold, or there is oil at a joint. Those three each mean the fault has moved past the part of the machine an owner can reach.
