The short answer for FFFDS models
An FFFDS unit that makes no ice is usually short of water rather than short of cold. Supply valves left half open, a saddle valve that has silted up, and a fill tube frozen shut account for most of it, and all three are visible. A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (minus 18 °C) or below, and an ice maker needs the compartment near that to cycle at all.
How the fault presents
- It stopped after work was done on the house plumbing — A shutoff left closed and grit stirred into the line are the two usual consequences.
- One solid block instead of separate cubes — The harvest cycle is not releasing, or cubes are melting and refreezing in the bin.
- Production stopped outright rather than slowing down — A sudden stop points at water or at the arm; a gradual one points at temperature.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet has no factory ice maker — Not every model under this stem is fitted with one. If there is no mould and no arm inside the freezer section, there is nothing here to repair.
Causes, most likely first on FFFDS models
- Water supply shut off, kinked or restricted at the valve — The supply usually starts at a small valve under a sink or behind the cabinet, and that valve is the part most often found half closed or silted up. First on this family because it needs nothing taken apart — on a cabinet this size it is a look and a listen, and excluding it costs less than five minutes.
- Freezer section not cold enough to cycle the mould — An ice maker only harvests once the mould reaches its release temperature, so a compartment running a few degrees warm makes ice slowly or stops entirely. Second here, and it is the rank most sensitive to how the cabinet is used — a unit opened all day sees this far sooner than one that is not.
- Bin jammed, or the arm held up by the ice already in it — The arm stops production when the bin is full, and a bridged clump of old ice holds it up while the bin is half empty. Ranked third here, because the two causes above it are both quicker to settle and more often the answer on a cabinet of this size.
What to check first, second, third
- Give it time between checks — An ice maker cycles slowly, so a change made now shows up in hours rather than minutes. Judging it too early is how the same check gets done three times.
- Follow the line back to its shutoff and open it fully — Then look along the line for a kink where the cabinet meets the wall.
- Judge the freezer section by the food in it — Ice cream that is soft and packets that flex are a temperature answer, not an ice maker answer.
- Empty the bin completely and break up any bridged ice — Then let the arm fall and give the machine a few hours before judging it.

When this stops being owner work
Call once the owner-side checks above are clean and the cabinet is still wrong. Call without finishing the list if the fault is on the sealed system — if you can see oil at the compressor or at a tubing joint, or you smell burning — because oil outside the tubing means the system is open, and every hour the unit runs after that costs more to put right.
