An AVRM refrigerator that runs without getting cold is rarely a dead compressor. On this family the fault is almost always in the heat path rather than in the pump: a condenser that cannot give up its heat, a door that is not sealing, or an evaporator buried in frost. The first two of those need no tools and no panel off.
What you actually observe
- The cabinet is warm but the unit is clearly running — You can hear the compressor and feel warmth at the back, and the air inside is still not cold.
- Cold at the bottom of the cabinet and warm at the top — Air is stratifying because nothing is moving it, which is the fan question rather than the refrigerant question.
- The compressor runs and never cycles off — A unit that cannot reach its set point never gets the signal to stop, so it runs continuously and the same fault is visible from the other side.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is warm and the unit is completely silent — That is a no-power or start-relay fault rather than a cooling fault, and it is a different article: check the socket, the cord and the breaker first.
Causes in likelihood order on this model group
- Condenser coil choked, or no clearance around the cabinet — Heat leaves the refrigerant at the condenser, and a coil packed with dust or a cabinet pushed tight into a recess cannot do it. On AVRM this is where to start, because the alternative first checks all need the cabinet moved or a panel off and this one does not.
- Evaporator iced over, so the air path is blocked — Frost belongs on the evaporator; a solid sheet across it does not. Ranked second because it explains the cases the first cause does not, and because on this family the two are checked from the same side of the cabinet.
- Evaporator or condenser fan not running — Either fan stopping produces a warm cabinet: without the evaporator fan the cold stays on the coil, and without the condenser fan the heat stays in the coil. Ranked third here. It is the point where an owner diagnosis starts needing tools, which is also the point where the value of carrying on drops.
What to check first, second, third
- Where to begin on AVRM models — Three of the causes above can be excluded without a tool, and this order puts every one of them ahead of anything that needs the cabinet moved or a panel off.
- Look at the condenser and at the clearance around the cabinet — Dust on the coil and a tight recess produce the same result, and both are visible without a tool.
- Look for a frost sheet on the freezer rear wall — A solid layer rather than a dusting confirms the airflow cause before anything is dismantled.
- Listen at the cabinet for each fan in turn — The condenser fan runs whenever the compressor does; the evaporator fan stops with the door switch, so hold the switch in to hear it.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.

The line between a fix and a service call
Book a technician once the checks above come back clean, and book one straight away if any of three things is true: the compressor is hot and silent, the breaker will not hold, or there is oil at a joint. Those three each mean the fault has moved past the part of the machine an owner can reach.
