The short answer for ARFSE models
When an Avanti ARFSE refrigerator stops making ice, the useful first question is whether water is arriving at all. Ice in the bin but fused into one lump is a completely different fault from an empty bin with a dry mould, and the two lead to different halves of this list.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- The bin is empty and the mould is dry — No water is arriving. The fault is upstream of the ice maker itself.
- The cubes have fused into one solid lump — Slow production, so each cube part-melts and refreezes onto the next.
- Water on the freezer floor under the ice maker — Overfill or a misaligned fill tube, and it will freeze into a sheet if left.
- The ice maker is silent and the arm is up — The bail arm in the raised position is the off switch, and it is knocked up more often than anyone admits.
- Ice cubes are hollow or half-sized — A partial fill, which means restricted flow rather than no flow.
- NEAR MISS — water is running down the inside of the door — That is a leak, and the water-leak page for this refrigerator covers it.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Bail arm or shut-off sensor in the off position — Ranked first because it costs nothing to check and because a bin being pulled in and out is exactly what knocks it up.
- Low household water pressure — Where the valve cannot open against the available pressure, the symptom is identical to a failed valve.
- Fill tube frozen — A partial fill that dribbles rather than shoots freezes in the tube and then blocks every fill after it.
- Water filter at the end of its life — Second: flow falls off gradually, so the owner sees smaller cubes for weeks before production stops entirely.
Check in this order, and why
- The order, and why it is this one — Work down this list rather than starting where the fault seems loudest.
- Look at the bail arm or the sensor window first — Up is off. This single look resolves more stopped ice makers than every other check on this page combined.
- Check the filter date and change it if you cannot remember — Filters are the commonest restriction and the cheapest part on the machine.
- Look into the fill tube with a torch for a plug of ice — A frozen tube blocks every fill after the first partial one.
- Check whether the mould is wet or dry — Dry means no water is arriving; wet means water arrives and the harvest is what has stopped.
Power off first, then the panel
Safety
Switch the breaker off or pull the plug before anything comes apart. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On a refrigerator the heavy items are the doors and the cabinet itself, so get help before moving it rather than after, and never lay it on its side to reach underneath.

When to call a technician
