The short answer for ARFSE models
An Avanti ARFSE refrigerator that runs but will not get cold is usually an airflow fault rather than a dead compressor: the evaporator ices over, the fan can no longer push cold air into the cabinet, and the food compartment warms while the machine sounds perfectly healthy. Two of the three likely causes can be checked without tools.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- Warm air blowing from the fresh-food vents — The fan is running and what it is moving is not cold.
- The back of the cabinet is hot to the touch — A condenser that cannot shed heat, usually because it is under a blanket of dust.
- The compressor never stops running — It runs without ever reaching temperature, which is the same fault seen from the other side.
- The cabinet is warm while the unit is clearly running — You can hear the compressor; the air inside is not cold and has not been for hours.
- NEAR MISS — only the ice maker has stopped — Ice production has its own page and its own causes.
Likely causes on ARFSE, ordered
- Condenser coil blanketed in dust — Ranked first because it is the one cause that develops on every unit in every kitchen and the one owners never look at.
- Control board or thermistor reading wrong — The unit believes it is at temperature and stops calling for cooling, which looks exactly like a mechanical failure from the outside.
- Evaporator iced over from a stalled defrost cycle — Second and close behind: adaptive defrost degrades before it fails, so ice accumulates quietly until the airflow path is blocked and the cabinet warms.
- Door seal failing or a door left ajar — A seal that has taken a set no longer touches the cabinet all the way round, and the unit spends its life pulling down warm room air.
What to look at first, second, third
- Where to begin — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: three of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on ARFSE models, so they come first.
- Check the fresh-food vents are not blocked by food — Boxes against the rear vents stop airflow exactly as ice does.
- Listen at the freezer for the evaporator fan — It separates the two likeliest causes before any tool comes out, and it costs nothing.
- Feel whether the condenser is hot or merely warm — A coil that is barely warm while the compressor runs is a coil not receiving heat, which changes the answer.
Before you take any panel off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the compressor circuit on a refrigerator is live whenever the plug is in. Leave the door switch wired exactly as it is: it cuts power to the evaporator fan for a reason, and defeating it puts a moving blade behind a panel you are reaching past.
