The short answer
Water around an ARF cabinet almost always started as condensate the machine made on purpose and then failed to route away, not as a burst pipe. On a apartment-size refrigerator the route is short and the places it can fail are few, which makes this one of the better faults to diagnose at home.
What you observe on these models
- Water pooling under the crisper drawers before it reaches the floor — On a full-height cabinet that is the defrost drain and almost nothing else.
- The puddle appeared after the cabinet was moved — Levelling, tray or hose, in that order.
- Water only after a long door opening — That is the cabinet catching up with the room rather than a leak.
- Water behind the cabinet rather than inside it — That separates a plumbing fault at the valve from a drain fault inside.
- NEAR MISS — water only after the door has been left open a long time — That is the cabinet catching up with the room, not a leak.
Causes, most likely first on the ARF family
- Defrost drain blocked at the bottom of the evaporator — First on this platform: on a full-height automatic-defrost cabinet this is the leak: water pools under the crisper drawers and then runs out onto the floor at the front.
- Water inlet valve, fill tube or the line to the ice maker — Second: a drip at the valve runs down the back panel and appears behind the cabinet, not inside it, which is how you separate it from the first cause.
- Cabinet not level in its space — Third: the drain is designed around a level floor and nothing else.
- Drip tray displaced or overfull — Fourth: on a two-door cabinet the tray carries the water from both compartments and fills faster than owners expect.
- Levelling, front to back — Last: tip this cabinet forward and the water leaves at the door instead of at the drain.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Check inside under the crisper drawers first — Water pooling there is the defrost drain and nothing else, and it is the commonest leak on a full-height cabinet.
- Flush the drain with warm water from inside the freezer compartment — Reach the outlet at the bottom of the evaporator area; clear it warm, never with a wire.
- Take the drawers and lower shelves out and look at the floor of the cabinet — Water pools where the drain is before it reaches your floor.
- Look at the outside of the cabinet as well as the inside — A sweating shell and a leaking drain need different fixes.
- Look behind the cabinet with a torch while the ice maker fills — A weeping inlet valve or line shows itself at the moment it is pressurised.

When to call a technician

On these models the line falls at anything behind a panel and anything on the sealed system. Call without working through anything at all for frost or ice returning within days of being cleared, together with a cabinet that will not hold.
