The short answer
On the ARF family this is far more often a heat-rejection or an air-path problem than a dead compressor, and the apartment-size refrigerator construction is why. Air is pushed from the freezer side to the fresh-food side, so reading both compartments comes before everything else.
What you observe on these models
- The freezer is fine and the fresh-food compartment is warm — On a full-height cabinet that is airflow from one compartment to the other, not a compressor.
- The problem began after the cabinet was moved or restocked — A history like that points at placement, levelling or loading before anything internal.
- Condensation or beads of water inside the cabinet — Warm moist air is getting in somewhere, and the same leak explains the warmth.
- No air movement when you hold a hand at the vents inside — The fan that should be pushing air has either stopped or is standing behind ice.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power, cold-control or start-relay fault and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on the ARF family
- Airflow between the freezer and the fresh-food compartment — First on this platform: on a full-height cabinet the fresh-food side is cooled by air pushed over from the freezer side, so the earliest sign of trouble is one compartment right and the other wrong.
- Evaporator fan or an iced evaporator behind the rear panel — Second: these two present together and are separated only by opening the panel: a fan that is silent, or a coil in a block of ice that the fan cannot move air through.
- Where the cabinet is standing — Third: beside an oven, against a radiator, in a sunlit corner or in an unventilated cupboard, the machine is fighting a load it was never specified for.
- The set point moved without anyone noticing — Fourth: controls get knocked while loading and touch panels get pressed while cleaning.
- Ice or frost bridging the cold surface — Last: ice is an insulator, so a coating over the cold surface reduces what the machine can take out of the air regardless of how well the compressor is running.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Read both compartments before you touch anything — One right and one wrong is an airflow fault; both wrong together points at the coil, the condenser or the sealed system.
- Listen at the freezer for the evaporator fan — Open and shut the door while listening: the fan should stop and start with the door switch.
- Close the door and look along the seal line at eye level — A package caught in the seal shows as a shadow along the edge.
- Give the cabinet a full day between changes — Changing two things at once makes the result unreadable.
- Look behind the freezer rear panel if the fan is running but nothing is cold — A coil in a block of ice is a defrost fault, and it is the commonest finding on a full-height cabinet that runs constantly.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On this platform there is no check worth doing that cannot wait the thirty seconds it takes to isolate the machine properly.

When to call a technician
The line on a apartment-size refrigerator is the rear panel and the sealed system. On these models the line falls at anything behind a panel and anything on the sealed system. Call without working through anything at all for frost or ice returning within days of being cleared, together with a cabinet that will not hold.
