The short answer
Most AFD noise complaints turn out to be a healthy machine amplified by what is around it, or something loose inside the cabinet, rather than a failing compressor. What you observe on these models

Causes, most likely first on the AFD family
- Evaporator fan behind the freezer rear panel — First on this platform: ice contact ticks, a failing bearing whines, and both stop the moment the freezer door opens.
- Ice maker filling and harvesting — Second: a buzz for a few seconds followed by a clatter is a fill and a drop, on a cycle, not a fault.

Check in this order, and why that order
- Open the freezer door with the noise running — A fan cut by the door switch is the fastest confirmation available on a full-height cabinet.
- Time the noise against the ice maker where one is fitted — A buzz followed by a clatter on a cycle is a fill and a harvest, not a fault.
- Pull the cabinet clear of the wall and cabinetry — If the noise halves, it was being amplified by what it was touching.
- Look and listen at the back for the condenser fan — Debris through the back grille is common in an apartment kitchen.
- Rock the cabinet gently by a top corner — Movement means the feet are not carrying it and every compressor start will be heard.
Before you open anything
