The short answer for MOTR models
An Avanti MOTR microwave that will not start usually has something inhibiting it rather than something broken. The door latch not making, a child lock, a clock that was never set, or a demonstration mode left on from the shop floor account for most of these, and none of them needs a tool.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- The oven runs for a second and stops — A latch that makes and breaks, or a thermal protector operating.
- It starts only if the door is pressed hard — A marginal interlock, and that is a safety fault rather than an inconvenience.
- The display shows a clock prompt or a demonstration message — Some ovens will not cook until the clock is set or the demonstration mode is cleared.
- A lock indicator showing on the display — The child lock, and the oven is behaving exactly as designed.
- NEAR MISS — the door itself is damaged or will not shut — Stop using the oven; the door page explains why that one comes first.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Door not latching fully — Ranked first because three interlocks sit behind the latch in series and any one of them stops the oven while the display looks normal.
- Start button or panel membrane failing — Some buttons respond and others do not, which is the tell.
- Power not reaching the oven — A tripped breaker or a socket that has worked loose behind the cabinet.
- Child lock engaged — Second because it is easily set by accident on a touch panel and the oven then ignores every press.
Working through it in order
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: three of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on MOTR models, so they come first.
- Open and close the door firmly and listen for the latch — A positive click is the latch making.
- Look at the display before pressing anything — Dead, lit, locked or prompting are four different faults and the display distinguishes them for free.
- Stop if the oven only starts when the door is pressed — That is an interlock fault, and the oven should be taken out of service rather than persuaded to run.
Before you do anything else, unplug it
Safety
Unplug the microwave at the socket before you examine anything, and keep the case closed. The capacitor in the high-voltage section can hold a lethal charge after the power is off. Do not run the oven empty, do not defeat any door interlock, and take the appliance out of service entirely if the door is damaged or the oven runs with the door ajar — the door is what contains the energy.
