The short answer for MOTR models
An Avanti MOTR microwave that lights up, turns the plate and counts down but leaves the food cold has a short list behind it, and almost all of it is in the high-voltage section. That section is not owner-serviceable at any point, so the useful work here is confirming the symptom rather than chasing the part.
What the owner sees
- Heating lost right after a power cut — Worth an isolate-and-restore before assuming hardware.
- The oven cuts out partway and then runs cold — A thermal protector operating, often because the cooling fan or the vents are blocked.
- A burning smell with no heating — Stop and unplug. That combination is not something to test further.
- The oven heats on some power levels and not others — Power levels are duty cycles, so a marginal fault shows up at one setting first.
- NEAR MISS — the breaker trips when it runs — That is an electrical fault and it takes priority over the heating symptom.
Likely causes on MOTR, ordered
- Magnetron at the end of its life — Ranked first because it is the part that makes the energy and the one that wears out, and gradual loss of power is its signature.
- Control board not calling for power — Rare, and reached by exclusion.
- Thermal protector open — Usually the result of blocked vents or a failed cooling fan, and the oven runs cold until it cools.
- Power level set low or a defrost programme selected — The cheapest possible cause and worth eliminating before anything else.
Check in this order, and why
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — This order exists because the cheap causes are also the likely ones: two of the four named above can be settled on MOTR models before a tool comes out.
- Put a cup of water in and run it for one minute — Warm water means the oven works and the problem was the food.
- Stop once you have the symptom described and leave it unplugged — Everything below this line is behind the case, and the case must not come off.
- Isolate the oven for a few minutes and restore power — It clears a control latched into an odd state after a supply interruption.
Why the case stays on
Safety
Switch the oven off at the socket and unplug it. On a microwave the high-voltage section holds a charge in its capacitor after the power is off, and that charge is lethal. There is no owner-serviceable part inside the case and no safe way to establish that the capacitor has discharged without the right tool.
