The short answer for EM models
An Avanti EM microwave that will not start usually has something inhibiting it rather than something broken. The door latch not making, a child lock, a clock that was never set, or a demonstration mode left on from the shop floor account for most of these, and none of them needs a tool.
What the owner sees
- A lock indicator showing on the display — The child lock, and the oven is behaving exactly as designed.
- The oven runs for a second and stops — A latch that makes and breaks, or a thermal protector operating.
- Some panel buttons respond and others do not — A failing membrane rather than anything behind it.
- A beep when start is pressed and nothing further — The oven has acknowledged the press and refused it for a reason.
- NEAR MISS — it starts and runs but food is cold — That is a heating failure and it belongs on that page.
Likely causes on EM, ordered
- Door not latching fully — Ranked first because three interlocks sit behind the latch in series and any one of them stops the oven while the display looks normal.
- Latch hooks worn — The same wear that causes door faults, presenting here as a no-start.
- Thermal protector open — Explains an oven that works from cold and refuses once it is warm.
- Interlock switch failed — The harder version of the first cause: the latch feels normal and a switch behind it no longer makes.
What to look at first, second, third
- The order, and why it is this one — On EM models, two of the four causes above are checkable without a panel coming off, and this order puts every one of them before anything that is not.
- Open and close the door firmly and listen for the latch — A positive click is the latch making. No click is your answer and it is the commonest one.
- Look at the display before pressing anything — Dead, lit, locked or prompting are four different faults and the display distinguishes them for free.
- Stop if the oven only starts when the door is pressed — That is an interlock fault, and the oven should be taken out of service rather than persuaded to run.
Why the case stays on
Safety
Switch the oven off at the socket and unplug it. On a microwave the high-voltage section holds a charge in its capacitor after the power is off, and that charge is lethal. There is no owner-serviceable part inside the case and no safe way to establish that the capacitor has discharged without the right tool. Clean the cavity and the door seal face; leave everything else alone, and never run the oven with a door that does not latch.

When to call a technician
Call for anything that is not cleaning. The high-voltage capacitor inside can hold a lethal charge after the oven is unplugged, so there is no owner repair on this appliance beyond the cavity, the turntable and the door seal face.
