The short answer for EM models
On the EM line, a microwave that runs cold is usually a failed magnetron, a failed high-voltage diode or a door interlock that is inhibiting the power while letting everything else run. All three are behind the case, and the case is the part that must not come off.
What you actually observe
- The turntable turns and the fan runs normally — Confirms the control side is fine and the fault is downstream.
- A burning smell with no heating — Stop and unplug. That combination is not something to test further.
- Heating has become gradually slower over months — A magnetron reaching the end of its life rather than a sudden failure.
- No sound at all beyond the fan — A transformer that is not being energised, which changes the likely cause.
- NEAR MISS — the breaker trips when it runs — That is an electrical fault and it takes priority over the heating symptom.
Causes on EM, most likely first
- Magnetron at the end of its life — Ranked first because it is the part that makes the energy and the one that wears out, and gradual loss of power is its signature.
- Door interlock inhibiting power — One switch of the three can stop the power while letting the light, the fan and the plate run normally.
- Control board not calling for power — Rare, and reached by exclusion.
- Thermal protector open — Usually the result of blocked vents or a failed cooling fan, and the oven runs cold until it cools.
Check in this order, and why
- Before anything else — Work down this list rather than starting where the fault seems loudest.
- Check the power level and the programme selected — A defrost programme or a low power level explains a cold result with nothing wrong at all.
- Check the vents are clear on a built-in or over-range installation — A blocked vent path is the one version of this fault an owner can fix.
- Stop once you have the symptom described and leave it unplugged — Everything below this line is behind the case, and the case must not come off.
Why the case stays on
Safety
Switch the oven off at the socket and unplug it. On a microwave the high-voltage section holds a charge in its capacitor after the power is off, and that charge is lethal. There is no owner-serviceable part inside the case and no safe way to establish that the capacitor has discharged without the right tool.
