The short answer for AVDWP models
When an Avanti AVDWP dishwasher leaks, the place the water shows is not always the place it comes from — water runs along the base tray and appears at the front regardless of where it started. So the useful first step is not to guess but to shut the supply, dry everything, and run a short cycle while watching.
What you actually observe
- Water running down the front of the door — The door seal or the lower door gasket, which is the commonest leak on this class.
- A leak that continues when the machine is off — Mains pressure, which means the supply valve should be closed now.
- Suds on the floor as well as water — Too much detergent, or washing-up liquid put in by mistake, and the overflow is the symptom.
- The machine stops mid-cycle with a fault after a leak — Many machines have a base tray float that shuts them down when it lifts.
- NEAR MISS — condensation on the door at the end of a cycle — That is the drying phase venting and it is not a leak.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Door seal perished or displaced — Ranked first because the door is the only part of a dishwasher that opens, and its seal takes a set from thousands of cycles of heat.
- Over-sudsing from the wrong detergent — Washing-up liquid in the dispenser produces suds that climb straight out of the door.
- Drain hose connection loose — Leaks only at the drain step, which is why it is so often missed.
- Machine not level, so the door does not sit square — A twisted cabinet holds one corner of the seal open permanently.
What to look at first, second, third
- Before anything else — Work down this list rather than starting where the fault seems loudest.
- Dry everything, put paper down and run a short cycle while watching — It is the only way to see where water actually starts rather than where it arrives.
- Close the supply valve and see whether the leak stops — A leak that continues with the water off is stored water; a leak that stops is mains-fed and urgent.
- Look under the plinth with a torch for the trail — Water travels along the base tray, so where it shows is rarely where it starts.
- Note whether the leak follows the drain step — That timing points at the drain hose and at nothing else.
Two isolations and one wait
Safety
Pull the plug or switch the breaker off, close the supply valve, and then wait for the machine to cool. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the sump element of a dishwasher stays hot long after the cycle ends. Wear a glove when clearing the sump: glass fragments end up there and cannot be seen in water.

When to call a technician
