The short answer for AVDWP models
An Avanti AVDWP dishwasher left standing in water is usually blocked rather than broken. The filter, the sump, the drain hose and — very often — the waste disposer connection or the sink spigot are all upstream of the pump, and all of them are owner-checkable.
What the owner sees
- The problem appeared right after a new waste disposer was fitted — The knockout plug, almost every time.
- Debris visible in the sump under the filter — What the filter should have caught and did not, usually because it is full.
- Water returning into the machine after it has drained — A drain hose with no high loop, so the sink siphons back.
- A cycle that stops partway and shows a fault — Many machines abort when they cannot verify the water has gone.
- Water backing up into the sink when the machine drains — The household connection, not the machine.
- NEAR MISS — water on the floor rather than in the machine — That is a leak and it needs the water shut off, not a drain cleared.

- Filter and sump packed with food waste — Ranked first because it is the commonest and the only one the owner is asked to maintain.
- Foreign object in the pump — Glass fragments, fruit stones and bones all reach the impeller once the filter is full.
- Drain hose kinked behind the machine — Pinched when the machine or a cabinet was last moved, and invisible without pulling the unit out.
- Drain pump failed — Less common than any of the above, and the symptom is silence at the drain step rather than a hum.
What to look at first, second, third
- Where to begin — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: two of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on AVDWP models, so they come first.
- Bail the water out and pull the filter — You cannot inspect anything until the machine is empty, and the filter is what you find first.
- Listen at the drain step and decide between a hum and silence — A hum is a blocked pump; silence is a pump not being driven.
- Check the air gap on the worktop if the installation has one — Grease builds inside it and it is the one part of the path visible from above.

Switch off at the breaker or unplug, then close the water supply valve. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On a dishwasher the sharpest hazard is glass: broken fragments collect in the sump under the filter and they are invisible in standing water, so wear a glove and use a torch rather than feeling around.

When to call a technician
Call once the free checks are done and the fault stands: filter cleaned, spray arms cleared, hose proved, waste proved. Call immediately rather than finishing the list if the machine has tripped a breaker, if there is water reaching a socket, or if the leak is continuous with the machine switched off, because that last one is fed at mains pressure.
