The short answer for A models
Lost cooling on an Avalon A refrigerator has an order to it that is worth respecting. Condenser dust and a frosted evaporator between them explain most of what we find on this line, and both are owner-diagnosable.
What you actually observe
- Food in the fresh-food drawers spoiling early — The drawers sit furthest from the vents and warm first.
- Condensation or sweating on the inside walls — Warm humid air is getting in faster than the unit can pull it down.
- The compressor never stops running — It runs without ever reaching temperature, which is the same fault seen from the other side.
- A sheet of frost on the freezer rear wall — Not the usual light dusting but a solid layer over the vents.
- NEAR MISS — water is pooling under the drawers — That is a blocked defrost drain and the water-leak page covers it properly.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Condenser coil blanketed in dust — Ranked first because it is the one cause that develops on every unit in every kitchen and the one owners never look at.
- Overloaded cabinet blocking the vents — Boxes pushed against the rear vents stop the airflow as effectively as ice does, and it is free to fix.
- Evaporator fan motor failed or obstructed — The fan sits behind the freezer rear panel. When it stops, cold is still being made and none of it moves, so the freezer stays cold and the fresh-food side does not.
- Defrost heater or thermostat failed — The ice that a working defrost cycle would clear simply accumulates until it fills the evaporator housing.
The order that saves the most time
- Before anything else — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: two of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on A models, so they come first.
- Check the fresh-food vents are not blocked by food — Boxes against the rear vents stop airflow exactly as ice does.
- Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull — If the paper slides out with no resistance at that spot, the seal is not touching there.
- Feel whether the condenser is hot or merely warm — A coil that is barely warm while the compressor runs is a coil not receiving heat, which changes the answer.
Before you take any panel off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the compressor circuit on a refrigerator is live whenever the plug is in. Leave the door switch wired exactly as it is: it cuts power to the evaporator fan for a reason, and defeating it puts a moving blade behind a panel you are reaching past.

When to call a technician
Call a technician when the checks above have not changed anything, when the fault needs a meter on live terminals, or when the answer turns out to be the sealed system. Call the same day rather than waiting if there is a burning smell, if the cabinet or the plug is hot, or if the unit has tripped a breaker — those are electrical faults rather than cooling ones and they do not improve with time.
