- The noise started after the cabinet was moved — Almost always the pan, the levelling or something now resting against a wall. A move rarely damages anything mechanical.
- A knocking or thumping from the compressor area — Mounts that have hardened with age, or a cabinet that is not sitting level on its feet.
- The noise stops the moment the door opens — That is the door switch cutting the evaporator fan, and it confirms the noise is that fan rather than anything else.
- NEAR MISS — the noise came with a loss of cooling — Then the noise is secondary and the cooling failure is the page you want for this family.
Ranked causes for these models
- Evaporator fan blade striking frost or ice — Top of the list on this platform for a structural reason: this is the only moving part living in the compartment that ices up, so it meets the ice first and reports it as sound.
- Drain pan or loose panel vibrating — The cheapest thing on the list and among the commonest. The pan walks out of its tray and buzzes, and the buzz changes the moment a hand touches the cabinet.
- Compressor mounts hardened, or the cabinet not level — A knock or a thump rather than a rattle. Levelling the cabinet on its front feet fixes a surprising share of these outright.
- Start relay or compressor fault — Last, and it is the one that comes with other symptoms. A compressor that clicks and does not start is a different problem from one that is merely noisy.
Where to listen, first to last
- Open the freezer door while the noise is happening — The door switch cuts the evaporator fan. If the noise stops instantly, you have found it without touching a tool.
- Check the cabinet is level and sitting on all its feet — A cabinet rocking on three points amplifies every vibration the compressor makes. Costs nothing to rule out.
- Pull the cabinet out and look into the condenser fan shroud — Debris in the shroud is common, visible and free to remove once you are looking at it.
- Note whether the noise tracks the cooling cycle — A noise present only while the compressor runs is a different list from one present all the time.
- Have someone open the freezer door while you listen at the back — Separates the two fans from each other, since only one of them stops when the door opens.

Before any panel comes off, take the power away at the plug or at the breaker. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, which is why the order is isolate first and open second.
