The sounds and what they mean
- The noise stops the moment the door opens — That is the door switch cutting the evaporator fan, and it confirms the noise is that fan rather than anything else.
- A buzz that appears only for a minute or two at a time — Something operating on a cycle — a defrost heater energising, a damper motor running, or a valve opening for the icemaker.
- The noise started after the cabinet was moved — Almost always the pan, the levelling or something now resting against a wall. A move rarely damages anything mechanical.
- A rhythmic chirp or squeal from inside the freezer — A fan blade catching ice once per revolution. It usually comes and goes with the cooling cycle, which is the giveaway.
- A sharp click a few seconds before the hum starts or stops — The start relay operating. A single click is expected; repeated clicking without the compressor running is not.
- NEAR MISS — the noise came with a loss of cooling — Then the noise is secondary and the cooling failure is the page you want for this family.
What it turns out to be, in order
- Evaporator fan blade striking frost or ice — First on this roster. The fan sits in the one part of the cabinet that accumulates ice, so any defrost weakness reaches it first and it reports the problem as noise long before the compartment warms up.
- Drain pan or loose panel vibrating — The cheapest thing on the list and among the commonest. The pan walks out of its tray and buzzes, and the buzz changes the moment a hand touches the cabinet.
- Start relay or compressor fault — Last, and it is the one that comes with other symptoms. A compressor that clicks and does not start is a different problem from one that is merely noisy.
Work in this sequence
- Open the freezer door while the noise is happening — The door switch cuts the evaporator fan. If the noise stops instantly, you have found it without touching a tool.
- Listen at the bottom rear with the unit running — Separates the condenser fan and the drain pan from anything happening inside the cabinet.
- Press a hand flat against each outer panel in turn — A buzz that changes or stops under hand pressure is a panel or a pan, not a bearing.
- Check the cabinet is level and sitting on all its feet — A cabinet rocking on three points amplifies every vibration the compressor makes. Costs nothing to rule out.
- Note whether the noise tracks the cooling cycle — A noise present only while the compressor runs is a different list from one present all the time.
- Empty the drain pan and refit it squarely — Costs nothing, and a pan walking in its tray is among the loudest and least serious faults here.
