Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The element's terminals sit in a wet environment at the back of the tub, so it is not a component to inspect on a connected machine. A standard household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A. Use descaling products intended for washing machines and follow their instructions; harsher chemicals attack seals and hoses and cause leaks that cost more than the scale did.

Call when heating has stopped altogether, because at that point descaling will not help and the element needs measuring and replacing.
