The short answer

- NEAR MISS — water appears only when the dishwasher or sink runs — That is a shared waste connection backing up rather than the refrigerator, and no work on the cabinet will change it.
Causes, most likely first on the ATUF line
- Defrost drain blocked or frozen at its opening — Ranked first on the ATUF line, because it is a small opening in the coldest part of the cabinet carrying water that is already close to freezing, which is a description of somewhere ice will eventually bridge. This label is wide enough that the only safe starting point is what every listing on it shares, which is why the order below begins with the checks that need no panel off.
- Water supply fitting, filter housing or inlet valve weeping — Second on the ATUF line, because it is the only water in the machine that is under pressure, which means it does not stop when the machine stops and it can put out far more than a defrost cycle ever will.
- Door seal letting humid air in, so the cabinet condenses — Third on the ATUF line: it produces genuine water rather than a trace, especially in humid weather, and it is the cause most often mistaken for a drain because the puddle appears in much the same place.
- Machine out of level so melt runs forward — Last on the ATUF line, because it changes where escaping water goes rather than whether it escapes, which is why it turns an invisible fault into a visible one.
Check in this order, and why
- Find where the water starts, not where it ends — Dry everything, lay paper towel at the front, at one side and at the back, and wait.
- Time the leak against the defrost cycle — Water that appears every few hours is following defrost; water that appears continuously is a supply fitting.
- Check the supply fittings and the level last — Dry every fitting behind the machine, look again after an hour, and while you are there confirm the cabinet is level and the seals close evenly all the way round.

The machine stays plugged in for the listening and the looking. It comes off supply — plug out, or breaker off — before any cover is disturbed, because a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and mains connections sit close together at the base of the machine compartment, so any spill there ends the job until the power is off at the breaker. Where the owner side ends
Call once the drain is proven clear, the pan is sound and the fittings are dry, since what remains is a leak inside the cabinet structure and that is a strip-down rather than an adjustment. Treat any leak on a wooden or laminate floor as same-day, because the floor is usually the expensive part of this fault rather than the appliance.
