The short answer
On a wine cabinet, a cabinet that runs and still will not hold temperature points first at one thing: the room has got hotter than the cabinet is rated to pull against. Next on the list: heat load coming straight through the glass door. The checks that matter most need no tools; the sealed system is the only part that is not owner work.
What you observe
- The cabinet is warm and the machine is clearly running — Work is going in and no cold is coming out.
- It fell behind as the weather warmed — Cold in spring, struggling by midsummer, fine again in autumn.
- The top shelf is noticeably warmer than the bottom — Heat entering through the door collects at the top of the cabinet.
- Condensation or frost gathers near one edge of the door — Room air entering at a gap gives up its moisture the moment it cools.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power or start-relay fault, and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- The room has got hotter than the cabinet is rated to pull against — First on this unit because it lives in a dining room or a cellar, where quiet matters as much as cold, and a refrigeration circuit is specified for a room inside a band.
- Heat load coming straight through the glass door — Ranked here because glass loses far more heat than an insulated panel, so anything shining on the door is load the compressor never puts down.
- The door gasket is no longer sealing — Ranked here because a leaking seal never announces itself; it simply makes the compressor run and run.

Check in this order, and why
- Compare the room now with when the cabinet last held temperature — Costs nothing and rules out a whole class of seasonal faults.
- Look at what falls on the glass across the day — Direct sun or a warm downlight is load the compressor carries continuously.
- Run the paper test around all four sides of the door — A sheet that slides out freely anywhere is a leak you can feel.
- Find and inspect the condenser coil — A grey felt across the fins is the commonest cause of poor cooling anywhere.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A loaded wine cabinet is far heavier than it looks and a glass door is unbalanced the moment it is open — empty it before it is moved, and never carry it alone.
When to call a technician
Call once the airflow and door checks above are clean and the cabinet still will not hold temperature — at that point the remaining causes are behind a panel or inside the sealed system. Call sooner if the compressor runs without a break: a cabinet that never reaches temperature works far harder than a healthy one. Call immediately if you smell burning or see oil anywhere near the compressor: oil outside the tubing means the system is open.
