The short answer
A noisy wine cabinet is usually telling you one thing: bottles and shelf racks resonating against the liner. Next on the list: the condenser fan is fouled or its bearing has dried out. Almost everything here is housekeeping rather than a failing compressor; the one service job sits at the bottom and sounds quite different.
What you observe
- A new sound the cabinet did not make when it was installed — What matters is whether it tracks the compressor, a fan, or your hand.
- The hum changes pitch when you touch the cabinet — Contact noise responds to a hand; machinery noise does not.
- A whirr from the machine compartment that rises as it runs — Fan noise tracks the run cycle exactly, which narrows it fast.
- A deep rumble you feel through the floor — Low frequency travels through structure; a bearing whine does not.
- NEAR MISS — a gurgle or a soft crackle after the compressor stops — Refrigerant settling in the liner. Normal, and no page can fix it.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- Bottles and shelf racks resonating against the liner — First on a wine cabinet, because its shelving is a set of loose timber or wire racks carrying heavy glass.
- The condenser fan is fouled or its bearing has dried out — Ranked here because it is the fan with the hardest life in the machine and the noise it makes is unmistakable once you know it.
- The compressor mounting grommets have perished — Ranked here because it is real on any high-hours cabinet but it makes a low rumble rather than the whirr or tick most calls describe.
- A rear panel, drip tray or pipe is buzzing against the shell — Last, but it takes a minute: lean on the panels one at a time while the machine runs.
Check in this order, and why
- Slide each rack out and back, listening as you go — If the noise changes with the racks, it is not the machine.
- Isolate the cabinet and spin the condenser fan by hand — A gritty or stiff blade is a bearing; a loose one is a mount.
- Listen for a low rumble that starts and stops with the compressor — A boom that tracks the run cycle is a mount, not a bearing.
- Press each panel in turn while the machine is running — A buzz that stops under your hand is a contact noise, nothing more.
What an owner can safely check
- Work out whether the noise tracks the compressor, a fan, or your hand — Three sources, three fixes, and nothing else helps until you know which.

- Reseat every rack and wedge any that move under a push — Cardboard between rack and liner is a legitimate permanent fix.

- Isolate the cabinet, clear debris from the fan and spin it by hand — It should coast freely and silently for a moment.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A loaded wine cabinet is far heavier than it looks and a glass door is unbalanced the moment it is open — empty it before it is moved, and never carry it alone.
When to call a technician
Call once the cabinet is level, the panels are secure and nothing loose is touching it, and a whirr, squeal or rumble is still there. That means a bearing or a mounting, and both mean the assembly comes out. Call urgently if the noise arrived with poor cooling — that is not a noise complaint at all. Call immediately if you smell burning or hear a scraping metal-on-metal sound.
