ARTEVINO Refrigerator: Abnormal Noise or Vibration
Most refrigerator noise comes from one of three moving parts — the evaporator fan behind the freezer wall, the condenser fan underneath or at the back, and the compressor itself — and you can usually tell which by where the sound is loudest and whether opening the freezer door changes it. Fan noise and rattles are owner-territory; a compressor that has become loud is not, and it is also the least common of the three.
What the owner actually observes
- A chirping, squealing or scraping noise from inside the freezer that stops the moment the freezer door is opened.
- A loud buzzing or humming from the lower back of the cabinet that comes and goes with the cooling cycle.
- A rattle or vibration that changes if you press a hand against the top or side of the cabinet.
- Periodic cracking, popping or gurgling that comes from inside the walls rather than from any one part.

- Whether the noise stops when the freezer door is opened, and returns when the door switch is held in — Order: second — Because: that single test isolates the evaporator fan from every other source in the cabinet without removing a panel
- The condenser fan area behind the lower kick panel, with the machine unplugged — Order: third — Because: it is reachable without dismantling anything and it is the second most common source
- The drip tray beneath the cabinet and anything resting on top of it — Order: fourth — Because: it is free and it eliminates the most common false alarm
Owner-safe checks
- Check where the cabinet lives and what is around it. A wine cabinet is specified to hold a narrow band, and it holds it against the room it stands in: a hot room, a blocked vent, direct sun on a glass door or a recently restocked cabinet full of room-temperature bottles will all present as a fault that is not one. — Step: first — Tools: a torch and a phone camera — Time estimate: a few minutes
- Open the freezer door while the noise is happening. If the sound stops immediately, it is the evaporator fan; press the door switch in with a finger to confirm the sound returns. - Unplug the machine and remove the lower kick panel. - Give the cabinet its clearances back: pull it far enough forward to clear the rear and upper vents, check that nothing sits on top of it, and let it run undisturbed for a full day before you judge whether it recovered. When to call a technician
The dividing line is whether the noise source is reachable without opening a sealed or live compartment. Call if the noise comes from the compressor itself and has become a knocking or a grinding rather than a hum. Call if the evaporator fan is confirmed as the source, since reaching it means removing the rear freezer cover. Call if the noise is accompanied by a cabinet that is no longer holding temperature. Call if the sound changed suddenly rather than gradually, which points at something that has broken rather than worn.
