The quick verdict
An Ariston dryer that smells hot, trips its circuit or runs unusually hot should be switched off at the breaker and left off. The two things worth doing yourself are clearing the whole lint path and looking at the plug and socket; everything else needs isolation and a meter. On gas models, a smell of gas means leaving the building before anything else.
How this shows up
- A scorched or hot smell during a cycle — Lint on or near the heater. Isolate the machine rather than finishing the load.
- The circuit trips when heating starts — An element or harness fault to earth, and it will repeat.
- The laundry room becoming very hot — Airflow restriction, and it is a fire precursor rather than a comfort question.
- Discoloured plug pins or a warm socket — A high-resistance connection under heavy load.
- A smell of gas at a gas model — Do not switch anything on or off. Leave the building and call the gas utility or the emergency services from outside.
What is behind it, in order
- Lint around the heater and in the duct — First, because the machine generates its own fuel and the filter catches only part of it.
- Element or harness leaking to earth — Second, and it produces the repeatable trip at the heat phase.
- Plug and socket degradation — Third, and characteristic of appliances that draw heavily for hours.
- Motor or capacitor failure — Fourth. It smells distinctive and often comes with a hum and no rotation.
- Gas burner or supply fault — Separate, specialist, and never an owner repair.
What to look at first
- Switch off at the breaker — The first action rather than the first check.
- Note when the fault happens — At heat, at start, or randomly.
- Inspect the plug, flex and socket — Damage there means part of the fault is in the house.
- Stop — Testing an element or a harness needs isolation and instruments.
What an owner can safely do
- Isolate at the breaker and unplug the machine — Leave it isolated until the fault is named.
About 5 min
- Clear the lint filter, the housing and the duct — The one owner action that materially reduces the risk while you wait.

- Inspect the plug pins, the flex and the socket — Discolouration or melting means an electrician replaces both plug and socket.

- Reset the circuit once with the machine unplugged — If it still trips, the fault is in the house. Stop here either way.

Power off, panels later
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A standard household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A, and a heating appliance sits near the top of what that carries, which is why its connections degrade first. Never dry anything contaminated with oil or solvent, because it can ignite after the cycle ends. If you smell gas at a gas dryer, do not operate any switch: leave the building and call the gas utility or the emergency services from outside.
When to stop and book someone
Call at the first burning smell or repeated trip, and keep the machine isolated meanwhile. Call an electrician first when the socket is damaged, when the circuit trips with the machine unplugged, or when anybody has felt a tingle from the cabinet. Call a registered gas engineer for anything on a gas model involving the burner, the flue or the supply, and say when you book which of those descriptions fits.

Scope of this page
This page covers the Ariston dryer class and stops where measurement or gas work begins. It publishes no element ratings, no wiring colours and no burner data, because those differ between builds under this badge and because publishing them invites unsafe work. Household wiring belongs to a licensed electrician and gas supply, burners and flues belong to a registered gas engineer. Where a family- or model-specific page exists, it carries the layout for that build.
