Read this first
Ariston dryers fail overwhelmingly in the air path: lint restricting the duct or the condenser, which then produces long cycles, overheating and eventually a tripped thermal cut-out and no heat at all. Drum and motor faults are less common, and electrical faults are the smallest group but the one that should never be left running.
What you actually see
- Long cycles, clothes still damp — Airflow. The most common complaint on this machine by a wide margin.
- Drum turns, no heat at all — The thermal chain. Usually an airflow overheat that has already happened.
- A burning smell or a tripping circuit — Stop. The electrical-safety page, and isolate the machine.
- Drum will not turn — Belt, motor or a jammed item, and it stops the cycle dead.
- Nothing happens when you press start — Door catch first, then supply. The will-not-start page.
- Loud rumbling or squealing — Drum supports or bearings, and worth attention before it becomes a seized drum.

- Restricted air path — First and by far the largest class, because a dryer manufactures its own blockage every cycle.
- Thermal devices opening — Second, and almost always downstream of the first.
- Door catch and start circuit — Third, and cheap to fix.
- Drum supports, belt and bearings — Fourth, and the wear class on an older machine.
- Electrical faults at the plug or harness — Least common, most urgent.

Where the owner fix ends
Cleaning the filter, the filter housing and the duct or condenser is owner work and it prevents most of what appears on this list. A machine that smells hot, trips a circuit or shows heat damage at the plug should be switched off at the breaker and left off until somebody has measured it. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. Gas models need a registered gas engineer for anything involving the burner or the supply.
