The short answer

The observables

- A squeal or chirp that follows the drum but not the pump — A belt or an idler running dry makes a sound tied to drum rotation, and it usually appears on wash long before it appears on spin.
- A dull thud once per drum revolution — Something is trapped between the drum and the outer tub, or a counterweight bolt has loosened.
- NEAR MISS — the noise is the drain in the wall rather than the machine — A gurgle or a suck from the standpipe as the machine empties is plumbing. It follows the pump exactly, which is why it gets attributed to the appliance.
Causes, most likely first on the ARWDF line
- Foreign object in the pump or between drum and tub — Ranked first here: it is the most common find of the lot, it needs no part to fix, and the two places an object can reach from the drum are both accessible from the front on the majority of machines. Check in this order, and why
- Identify which part of the cycle the noise belongs to — Fill, wash, drain and spin drive different parts. A sound that only happens on drain is the pump; one that only happens above a certain speed is balance or bearing.
- Run a drain-only or spin-only programme and listen — Isolating the pump from the drum, and the drum from the fill, removes half the shortlist without opening anything or waiting through a full cycle.
- Push the drum up and down at the front edge — Movement with a knock, or a drum that sits visibly low against the seal, points at bearings or suspension rather than at anything that can be cleared from the filter.

Both taps off and the plug out before anything is opened, in that order: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off and the filter holds water whatever the display says. Most of a washing machine’s weight is concrete bolted at the top of the tub, which makes it unstable once it is out of its space and tilted. Get help before it moves, keep the door interlock exactly as you found it, and never run the machine with a panel off to see what happens..

When this stops being an owner job
Call as soon as the noise rises and falls with drum speed on spin, since a bearing that has started to go takes the seal with it and a leak into the bearing is what turns a repair into a replacement. Anything that has started to move the machine across the floor gets stopped now rather than scheduled, because the hoses are what it reaches first.
