The useful distinction is whether the sound keeps time with the drum, with the blower, or with neither. What an owner actually sees
- A rhythmic thump that keeps time with the drum — A flat spot on a support roller, or a seam in the drum passing a worn glide.
- A rattle or a clatter that is faster than the drum — The blower turns far faster than the drum, so anything caught in it rattles at a much higher rate — a coin in the blower housing is the classic version of this sound.
- A scraping or grinding that changes with load — The drum is running on worn glides or a failed roller and is making contact with the bulkhead.
- A single clunk at start and at stop — The drum settling into or out of its supports. It is normal on many designs, and it only matters if it has changed character or become louder.
- NEAR MISS — the rattle is the vent hose against the wall — A loose duct behind the machine drums against the cabinet or the wall whenever the blower runs, and it is visible from behind without anything being opened.
Causes, most likely first on the ARWDF line
- Worn drum support rollers or rear bearing — Ranked first here: they carry the whole weight of a loaded drum turning for thousands of hours, they wear flat rather than failing outright, and the thump they produce keeps exact time with the drum, which makes them easy to identify. The same label also carries washer and washer-dryer combo listings, so the cabinet and its controls were designed to do more than one job and a fault can sit on the half you are not looking at.

What to check first, second, third
- Turn the empty drum by hand with the power off — Roughness, a catch once per revolution and a rumble from the rear bearing are all audible by hand and inaudible under a running motor.
- Listen to a short run from cold and then from warm — A squeal that fades as the machine warms is a belt or idler; a noise that is unchanged from cold to warm is mechanical wear that will not improve.
- Run the machine empty and then with a small load — A sound that changes with load points at the front glides and the drum seal; one that is identical either way points at the rollers, the blower or the motor.

Safety
Let the machine cool and take the plug out before any cover moves: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A stacked dryer is heavy and high, and an installation that has shifted can come down. Never work on a stacked machine alone, and never run a dryer with a panel off — the blower and the drum both turn immediately when the door closes..

Call once the whole air path is proven clear and the fault is still there, because everything remaining is measured behind a panel rather than seen. Stop using the machine if the noise is metal on metal, or if anything smells hot: a dryer is the one appliance in the house where lint and heat sit in the same box.
