Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A thermal device that has operated did so to prevent a fire, so resetting one and carrying on without clearing the airflow simply schedules the next overheat. On gas models, do not touch the burner, the igniter or the gas connection; if you smell gas, leave the building without operating any switch and call the gas utility or the emergency services from outside.
What is not a homeowner job
Call once the lint path is clear, the right programme is selected and the machine still tumbles cold, because the element, the thermostats and the cut-outs need measuring across isolated terminals. Call a registered gas engineer for any gas model with no ignition. Ask for the airflow to be checked as part of the repair rather than only the failed part, because a machine that cut out once on temperature will do it again if nothing upstream changed.
