The quick verdict
An Arctic Wind dryer that runs a full cycle and leaves the load damp is nearly always short of airflow: a lint filter that is clean to the eye but glazed with fabric softener, a choked filter housing, or a vent duct crushed behind the machine. Overloading is the second cause, and both are owner-fixable in an afternoon.
The observable signs
- Clothes damp after a full cycle but the machine is hot — Heat without airflow. The classic lint-path signature.
- Cycles taking far longer than they used to — Gradual airflow loss, exactly as a duct silts up.
- The machine stops early with the load still wet — Sensor drying misreading, or thermal protection cutting the heat.
- Very hot clothes and a hot room — On a vented machine, the duct is blocked and the heat is coming back at you.
- NEAR MISS: heavy items still damp after a mixed load — Normal. Towels and jeans dry at a different rate from shirts.
What is behind it, in order
- Lint filter and its housing — First, and the filter that looks clean is the trap: fabric softener leaves an invisible film that halves airflow.
- Blocked or crushed vent duct — Second on vented machines, and it produces the hot-room symptom that makes it recognisable.
- Overloading — Third. A drum packed past about half full cannot tumble, and clothes that do not tumble do not dry.
- Condenser or heat exchanger fouled — Fourth, and specific to condenser machines: a furred exchanger cannot condense the moisture out.
- Moisture sensor coated in residue — Last. Softener film on the sensor bars makes the machine believe the load is dry.
The order to work in, and why
- Wash the lint filter in hot soapy water — Not brush it, wash it. If water pools on the mesh rather than running through, you have found your fault.
- Look into the filter housing with a torch — Lint packs behind the filter where nobody looks.
- Check the duct or the condenser unit — Whichever your machine has, this is the second half of the airflow path.
- Halve the load and rerun — It settles the overloading question definitively.
Steps up to the stopping point
- Wash the lint filter under a hot tap and dry it — Water should pour straight through the mesh. If it beads or pools, the film is your fault and it recurs every few months.

Safety first, and it is not boilerplate
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Lint is the fire load in a dryer, and a blocked duct combined with a heater is the mechanism behind most dryer fires: this maintenance is a safety job, not a performance one. Never run a vented dryer with the duct disconnected into the room, and never dry anything that has been in contact with oil or solvent, because it can self-heat after the cycle ends.
The line for a service call
Call when the whole airflow path is clean and the load still comes out damp, because the remaining candidates are the heater, the thermostat and the moisture sensing, and all need measurement. Call sooner if the machine or the room becomes very hot, since a machine cutting out on thermal protection is telling you something urgent about airflow. On gas machines, any heating fault is a gas-engineer job rather than a general appliance one.
