An Arctic Wind dryer that smells of burning, trips its circuit or runs unusually hot should be switched off at the breaker and left off. On gas models, any smell of gas means leaving the building and calling the gas utility or the emergency services from outside. Owner action here is limited to isolating the machine, clearing the lint path and looking at the plug and socket.
What you actually see
- A hot or scorched smell during a cycle — Lint on or near the heater. Stop the machine and isolate it.
- The circuit trips when the heater comes on — An element or a harness fault to earth, and it will repeat.
- A very hot cabinet or a very hot laundry room — Airflow restriction. It is a fire precursor rather than a comfort issue.
- Discoloured plug pins or a warm socket — A high-resistance connection under a heavy load. Both plug and socket need replacing.
- A smell of gas near a gas dryer — Leave the building. Do not switch anything on or off, and call the gas utility or the emergency services from outside.
Ordered by what we actually find
- Lint accumulation around the heater and duct — First on this appliance, because a dryer manufactures its own fuel load and the filter only catches part of it.
- Heating element or harness fault to earth — Second, and it produces repeatable trips at the point where heat comes on.
- Plug and socket degradation — Third, and specific to appliances that draw heavily for long periods.
- Motor or capacitor failure — Fourth. It produces a distinctive hot-electrical smell and often a machine that hums without turning.
- Gas burner or supply fault, on gas models — Separate and specialist: never an owner repair, and the smell of gas is an evacuation rather than a diagnosis.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and dryer motors carry one. A standard household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A, and a heating appliance sits near the top of what that will carry, which is why its plug and socket degrade faster than others. Never dry anything contaminated with oil, petrol or solvent: it can ignite after the cycle has finished. If you smell gas at a gas dryer, do not operate any switch, leave the building, and call the gas utility or the emergency services from outside.
The line for a service call
Call at the first burning smell or repeated trip, and leave the machine isolated until somebody has measured it. Call an electrician first when the socket is damaged, when the circuit trips with the machine unplugged, or when anybody has felt a tingle from the cabinet. Call a registered gas engineer, not a general technician, for anything on a gas model that involves the burner, the flue or the supply. Describe when the fault happens when you book, because it decides what arrives.
