What the bin is telling you
On the Arctic Wind ATMSL refrigerator family an ice maker that has stopped is far more often a water-supply or a temperature problem than a failed ice maker. The roster here is five listings, ATMSL181, ATMSL181TH and ATMSL212E, plus the starred variants of those numbers shown in the table below, and on cabinets built this way the ice maker only runs once the freezer compartment is genuinely cold, so a freezer sitting a little warm will produce exactly this complaint with nothing broken at all.
How it presents
- No ice at all and the bin is dry — No water is arriving. The supply, the shut-off arm and the fill valve are all upstream of the ice maker itself and all cheaper.
- Hollow or undersized cubes — Water is arriving but not enough of it. Points at fill volume, a partly restricted line or a saddle valve that has never fully opened.
- NEAR MISS - water pooling on the floor as well as no ice — A supply-line leak presents as both at once. The water-leak page for this family covers it.
Ranked by what actually turns up
- Shut-off arm or bin sensor reading full — First on this roster and the cheapest finding on the page. A wire arm lifted by a bag of frozen food, or an optical sensor with frost on its window, stops production completely and looks exactly like a failed ice maker from the front.
- Freezer compartment running too warm to make ice — Placed at this point because it is the cause that turns an ice complaint into a cooling job. If the cabinet has any other temperature symptom, this is not second on the list - it is the whole list.
- Fill tube frozen or ice bridged in the mould — At this position because it produces a distinctive pair of symptoms - shrinking cubes and a sheet of ice under the bin - that no other entry on this list produces together.
- Ice maker module, motor or thermostat failed — Last on this list rather than first. The module does fail - the harvest motor, the mould heater or the thermostat that starts the cycle - but every cause above it is cheaper to confirm and more often responsible.
- Body: The ranking below differs from the brand-generic order in one place: freezer temperature moves above the ice maker module. On the ATMSL roster the ice maker is gated on compartment temperature, so a freezer running marginally warm produces a dead ice maker with nothing wrong inside it.
What to check first
- Empty the bin completely and look at the shut-off arm — A raised arm or a frosted sensor window stops production silently. This is the single commonest finding and it costs nothing.
- Confirm the cabinet has a factory ice maker at all — Some listings on a roster like this ship without one, and a hookup kit fitted later behaves differently from a factory installation.
- Body: Each step here rules out a branch. The roster covers more than one number series, so confirm the ice maker fitment and the fill path against your own rating plate before ordering a part.
Before a panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing the ice maker or any freezer panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Wear gloves: the mould edges and the evaporator fins behind the rear liner are both sharper than they look, and never chip at bridged ice with a screwdriver.
Models in the ATMSL family — Every listing this page generalizes over. Check the number on your rating plate against it before ordering a part. A starred entry in the table is the same base number recorded a second way in the parts data; treat it as the same platform for this fault unless your own parts diagram says otherwise.

When to call a technician
Call if the fault returns after a fill tube has been cleared, because that means the reason it froze has not been addressed. Call straight away if the supply line is weeping at a fitting, if there is ice building outside the bin, or if the cabinet has any electrical smell at all.
