What the bin is telling you
Ice faults on an Arctic Wind ABMU refrigerator split into three: no water arriving, water arriving and not freezing in time, or ice forming and not releasing. This page covers one base number, ABMU171E, carried twice in the parts data. Which of the three you have is usually decided by looking in the bin rather than by taking anything apart.
What the bin is telling you
- No ice at all and the bin is dry — No water is arriving. The supply, the shut-off arm and the fill valve are all upstream of the ice maker itself and all cheaper.
- Ice production started falling after a filter change — Restriction or air in the line. The filter path is upstream of everything and is worth ruling out early.
- NEAR MISS - water pooling on the floor as well as no ice — A supply-line leak presents as both at once. The water-leak page for this family covers it.
Likely causes in order
- Shut-off arm or bin sensor reading full — At the top because it is the only cause on this page that can be created accidentally by putting the shopping away, which makes it both the commonest and the least suspected.
- Freezer compartment running too warm to make ice — Ranked here because the ice maker will not even begin a cycle until the mould reaches its threshold, so a marginally warm freezer stops production while every package in it stays rock hard.
- Water inlet valve failing or partly blocked — Ranked mid-list. It is a real and common failure, but the supply checks above it are free and rule out most of what looks like a valve problem.
- Ice maker module, motor or thermostat failed — Ranked last. The pattern that genuinely points here is a mould that fills, freezes correctly and then never harvests, with the freezer temperature and the water supply both confirmed good.
- Body: This order puts the ice maker module itself in the middle rather than at the top. It does fail, but it is asked to fail far more often than it does, and everything above it on this list is cheaper to rule out.
Diagnostic order on these models
- Put a thermometer in the freezer and wait — A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below and an ice maker needs the same. A hand cannot measure this.
- Trace the supply line to its shut-off — Confirm the valve is fully open and the line is not crimped where the cabinet was pushed back into place.
- Check whether anything else was plumbed in recently — A shared supply that now feeds two appliances can leave a marginal valve short of the flow it needs.
- Body: The order below follows the water rather than the parts list. On the ABMU roster the supply crosses from outside the cabinet to inside it, so checking in flow order is what keeps you from opening a freezer for a fault that lives under the sink.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before anything comes out of the freezer compartment, and a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The harvest motor will run a cycle without warning while the cabinet is live, so isolation is not optional simply because the job looks small.
Models in the ABMU family — Every listing this page generalizes over. Check the number on your rating plate against it before ordering a part. A starred entry in the table is the same base number recorded a second way in the parts data; treat it as the same platform for this fault unless your own parts diagram says otherwise.

When to stop and call
Stop when the next step needs the water line opened or the freezer liner disturbed. On the ABMU listings both are true past the free checks. Call urgently if ice production stopped at the same time as the cabinet started warming, because the ice maker is then a symptom and not the fault.
