What the bin is telling you
On the Arctic Wind ABMSL refrigerator family an ice maker that has stopped is far more often a water-supply or a temperature problem than a failed ice maker. The roster here is two models, ABMSL141E and ABMSL170E, and on cabinets built this way the ice maker only runs once the freezer compartment is genuinely cold, so a freezer sitting a little warm will produce exactly this complaint with nothing broken at all.
How it presents
- Cubes that are cloudy, slow and stuck together — The mould is filling and freezing too slowly, which is usually a freezer temperature problem rather than an ice maker problem.
- Ice production started falling after a filter change — Restriction or air in the line. The filter path is upstream of everything and is worth ruling out early.
- The freezer feels cold but ice takes far longer than it used to — A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below; an ice maker needs that too. Feel is not a measurement here.
- NEAR MISS - water pooling on the floor as well as no ice — A supply-line leak presents as both at once. The water-leak page for this family covers it.
Likely causes in order
- Shut-off arm or bin sensor reading full — At the top because it is the only cause on this page that can be created accidentally by putting the shopping away, which makes it both the commonest and the least suspected.
- Freezer compartment running too warm to make ice — Ranked here because the ice maker will not even begin a cycle until the mould reaches its threshold, so a marginally warm freezer stops production while every package in it stays rock hard.
- Household water supply, saddle valve or filter restriction — Everything upstream of the cabinet is invisible from the kitchen. A shut-off never fully opened, a saddle valve pierced but barely flowing, a filter past its service interval or a line crimped behind the unit all reduce fill volume before they stop it.
- Ice maker module, motor or thermostat failed — Bottom of the ranking deliberately. Replacing the module is the most expensive answer on the page and it is the one most often bought before the free checks have been done.
- Body: This ranking is deliberately unflattering to the ice maker. It is the part owners replace first and the part least often at fault, and the order below exists to make that mistake unlikely.
Diagnostic order on these models
- Look at the shape of the cubes being made — Hollow and small means short fill; cloudy and fused means slow freeze. The shape sorts the water branch from the temperature branch.
- Trace the supply line to its shut-off — Confirm the valve is fully open and the line is not crimped where the cabinet was pushed back into place.
- Run water from the dispenser if the cabinet has one — Good dispenser flow proves the supply and the filter, which removes the whole upstream branch in one action.
- Body: Work down this list. The first two checks need nothing but an open freezer door and a thermometer, and between them they account for the large majority of no-ice calls on cabinets of this type.

Safety
Switch the unit off at the breaker or unplug it before removing the module, and close the water shut-off first. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If water has reached anything electrical inside the cabinet, stop and call - do not power the appliance back up to test it.

When this stops being an owner job
Call when the checks above are clean and the cabinet still makes no ice, because on the ABMSL roster the next step is either a pressurised fitting or the module itself. Call sooner if you find water where it should not be, and close the supply valve before you make the call.
