The short answer

Power off at the breaker before working, and remember that the belt and the idler are under tension inside the cabinet - they are not something to probe with a machine that could be energised. A dryer is heavy and awkward to pull out, and the exhaust duct behind it crushes easily when it goes back, which creates a heating fault on top of a noise one. Let the cabinet cool before opening it and put every panel back before power is restored.

When to call a technician
Call if the noise is a regular thump once per drum revolution that you can feel when turning the drum by hand, because that is a support fault and it will get worse rather than better. A rattle that turns out to be a coin needs no call at all, which is exactly why the free checks come first.
