The short answer
On the ARU family a freezer that will not hold temperature is usually struggling to reject its heat, and where the cabinet stands decides that. These cabinets often live in garages, utility rooms and outbuildings, and the installation is the single biggest variable in whether they work.
What you observe on these models
- The cabinet runs constantly but the contents have softened — Ice cream that will not hold its shape is the earliest reliable sign, well before anything thaws.
- Heavy frost on the walls or on the lid seal — Frost is moisture that got in, and on a freezer it is usually the seal telling you how.
- The contents at the top are soft and the bottom is still solid — Stratification like this says the cabinet is losing cold at the opening rather than failing to make it.
- NEAR MISS - the cabinet is silent and warming — No compressor noise at all is a power, control or start fault and belongs on a page about a freezer that will not run.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Ambient temperature outside the cabinet rating — First on this family. A cabinet in an unheated garage in winter or a hot outbuilding in summer is being asked to work outside its range, and no part replacement changes that, and because the family is one platform whose model numbers share a prefix, the same fault turns up across the models listed above.
- Condenser surface fouled or boxed in — Second. Many cabinets of this type reject heat through their own skin or a coil at the back, and a cabinet pushed into a corner, covered, or coated with dust cannot do it.
- Seal, lid and frost — Third. A poor seal makes everything above worse and adds an ice load of its own, but on this family it is a contributing cause more often than the whole story.
- Thermostat, start device and the sealed system — Last. A cabinet with good airflow, a good seal and a sensible room that still will not get cold has a real component fault, and at that point it is worth paying for measurements.
Check in this order, and why this family dictates it
- Check what the room does over a full day — A garage that drops close to freezing overnight or an outbuilding that bakes in the afternoon explains this complaint entirely.
- Feel the cabinet skin and the back for warmth after an hour of running — Second: heat coming off means the system is pumping, and a cold shell with warm contents is the most useful early finding here.
- Pull the cabinet clear and clean the condenser surfaces — Third, because it is free, it is often overdue, and the improvement shows within a day.
- Then check the seal and defrost the cabinet — Last of the owner checks: it matters, but on this family it usually sits behind the installation questions above.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees F (minus 18 degrees C) or below; food that has been above that for hours should not be refrozen on the assumption that it is fine.

When to call a technician
Call when the cabinet has been defrosted, sealed and given clearance and still will not reach temperature, when the compressor is clicking in and out every few seconds, when it is too hot to keep a hand on, or when a breaker trips on start. Give the model number from the table above when you call: the start and control parts differ across this model list.
