The short answer
On the ACFM family a freezer that runs without holding temperature is usually losing cold at the opening rather than failing to make it. Freezer cabinets in this class depend almost entirely on their seal and their insulation, and there is very little else to go wrong before the sealed system itself.
What you observe on these models
- The cabinet runs constantly but the contents have softened — Ice cream that will not hold its shape is the earliest reliable sign, well before anything thaws.
- Heavy frost on the walls or on the lid seal — Frost is moisture that got in, and on a freezer it is usually the seal telling you how.
- The contents at the top are soft and the bottom is still solid — Stratification like this says the cabinet is losing cold at the opening rather than failing to make it.
- NEAR MISS - the cabinet is silent and warming — No compressor noise at all is a power, control or start fault and belongs on a page about a freezer that will not run.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Lid or door seal not seating — First on this family. A seal that has taken a set, a hinge that has dropped or a load pushing against the opening keeps a gap that admits humid room air continuously, and because the family is one platform whose model numbers share a prefix, the same fault turns up across the models listed above.
- Frost build-up from that leak, choking the cold surfaces — Second, and it is the direct consequence of the first.
- Overloading and warm loading — Third. Filling a cabinet of this size in one go, or packing it so that air cannot move at all, asks it to remove more heat in a day than it can, and the result reads as a failure.
- Thermostat, start device and the sealed system — Last. These are the genuine component failures, and on this family they account for the minority of these calls, which is exactly why they belong after the three above.
Check in this order, and why this family dictates it
- Close the lid on a sheet of paper at several points and pull — Any point where the paper slides out freely is where the cold is going, and it explains the frost as well.
- Look at where the frost is heaviest — Second: frost concentrated near one part of the opening points straight at the leak, and frost everywhere points at a cabinet that has been open or is overloaded.
- Defrost the cabinet completely and restart it empty — Third, because it separates an insulation problem from a refrigeration one without a single tool.
- Only then judge the compressor and the control — Last: a cabinet that still will not reach temperature when clean, empty and sealed has a component fault, and that is a technician visit.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees F (minus 18 degrees C) or below; food that has been above that for hours should not be refrozen on the assumption that it is fine.

When to call a technician
Call when the cabinet has been defrosted, sealed and given clearance and still will not reach temperature, when the compressor is clicking in and out every few seconds, when it is too hot to keep a hand on, or when a breaker trips on start. Give the model number from the table above when you call: the start and control parts differ across this model list.
