The short answer
An AooDen dishwasher that will not drain is either restricted inside — filter, sump, pump — or blocked outside, in the waste connection it shares with the sink. Start by testing the sink, because it costs nothing and it decides which half of the path you are working on. Inside the machine, the filter and the sump account for the great majority of restrictions.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- Standing water in the tub at the end of the programme — The presenting symptom. Note whether it is clean or greasy, which tells you how long it has been developing.
- The sink is slow as well — Household waste. Stop here and call a plumber rather than a technician.
- A hum during the drain phase with no water movement — Pump energised, impeller blocked or failed. Do not keep restarting it.
- Water gurgling back into the machine after it drains — A siphoning problem at the waste connection, usually a missing high loop or air gap.
- NEAR MISS: a shallow film of water in the sump — Designed. The sump holds a small charge to keep the seal wet.
Causes, most likely first
- Household waste connection or trap — Listed first on this page precisely because it is the one people never test, and it accounts for a real share of these calls.
- Filter and sump loading — Second, and the most common cause inside the machine. It builds over months and then blocks in a week.
- A disposal unit connection left blanked — Third, and specific to installations with a waste disposer: the knock-out plug was never removed.
- Kinked or sagging drain hose — Fourth. Nearly always dates from the last time the machine was moved.
- Drain pump jammed or failed — Last. It is the diagnosis owners reach for first and the one that is actually least common.
What to look at first
- Run the kitchen sink hard for a minute — The single most informative thing you can do, and it needs no tools at all.
- Bail the tub and lift the filter — You cannot see anything through standing water.
- Pour a jug of water into the sump and watch it go — Or not go, which is the answer.
- Inspect the hose run and the waste spigot — Last, because it means moving the machine. Get a second person before you pull the cabinet out or tilt it.
Owner-side checks, step by step
- Test the sink and the waste before touching the machine — If the sink backs up, the appliance is not your problem and a plumber is the right call.
About 5 min
- Bail out the standing water — A jug then a sponge. Everything downstream of this step is guesswork with water in the way.

- Strip the filter and clear the sump by hand — Gloves on. Broken glass collects exactly where you want to put your fingers.

- Check the hose run and the waste spigot connection — Look for a kink, a sag or a blanked disposer inlet. Stop here rather than removing the machine's base panel.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or working in the sump — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Standing dishwasher water hides broken glass and is often still hot late in a programme, so let it cool and bail it rather than reaching into it. If you disconnect a waste hose, have a bowl and towels ready: the machine holds more water than the tub shows.
When to call a technician
Call a plumber when the sink is slow as well, because the appliance will drain perfectly once the branch does. Call a technician when the sink runs freely, the filter and sump are clean, the hose is sound and the water still stays put, since the remaining candidates are the pump and the hose interior. Call quickly if the pump hums without moving water, because a stalled pump that keeps being restarted destroys itself and sometimes takes the control with it.

Scope of this page
This page treats the AooDen dishwasher as a class and stops there. It carries no pump identifiers, no hose sizes and no filter part numbers, because those differ between builds under this badge. Where a family- or model-specific page exists it names the sump and pump for that build and is the better reference before buying anything. The sink waste, the trap, the disposer and any air gap are plumbing, and although they cause a genuine share of these faults they belong to a plumber rather than to this page.
