The short answer
A countertop machine washes with a small fixed volume of water through one spray arm, so under-filling and over-loading account for most poor results. Fill it to the mark and load it lightly before you suspect any part.
What you actually see and hear
- Food left on items at the back or the edges — One spray arm cannot reach what is shielded from it.
- Everything comes out with a gritty film — The filter is loaded and the machine is recirculating soil.
- Poor results only on short or eco programmes — Not enough time at temperature for the detergent to work.
- Results worse when the machine is full — Loading beyond what one arm can cover.
- NEAR MISS - white chalky marks rather than food residue — Water hardness and rinse aid, not a mechanical fault.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Under-filling the tank — First on a tank-fill machine, and unique to this class: if the tank is short, the machine has less water to wash and rinse with, and results fall off immediately.
- Overloading a very small tub — Second. Countertop machines hold far less than their footprint suggests, and one shielded plate ruins the load beside it.
- Blocked spray arm or plugged jets — Third. With a single arm, one blocked jet removes a whole sector from the wash.
- Filter loaded — Fourth. The filter is small and it fills within a handful of cycles if plates go in unscraped.
- Programme too short for the soil — Fifth. These machines heat their own water, and a short programme spends most of its time doing that rather than washing.
- Detergent type and dose — Last, but a common contributor: tablets designed for full-size machines can be too much for a small tub.
Check in this order, and why
- Check the tank is filled to its mark before starting — On a tank-fill machine this is the first and most productive check.
- Spin the spray arm by hand with the rack loaded — Anything it touches will not be washed.
- Pull the filter and look at it — Grit here is grit that was on the dishes.
- Run one light load on a longer programme — If a light load on a long cycle is clean, the machine is fine and the loading was not.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A countertop dishwasher puts a live appliance and an open water tank on the same worktop, so keep the plug and the socket away from the fill opening and wipe spills immediately. Let a hot cycle cool before reaching into the tub, and never carry the machine with water still in the tank.
When to call a technician
Call or contact the supplier when the tank is filled properly, the arm spins freely, the filter is clean, the load is light and a long programme still leaves dishes dirty - that points at the heater or the wash pump. Be realistic about the economics of a countertop machine: a call-out often approaches the price of the appliance, so exhaust the owner-side list first. For chalky marks and cloudy glass, no repair applies at all.
