The short answer

What you actually see and hear
- Trays take hours longer than expected — Frost on the plate, a warm dial setting, or both.
- The box frosts up heavily while the shelves stay cool — Normal for a static cabinet - the plate is the coldest surface and frost forms there first.
- Nothing freezes and the fridge is barely cool — A whole-cabinet cooling problem rather than an ice one.
- Ice forms on the food in the box rather than in the tray — Humid air entering and freezing on contact.
- NEAR MISS - expecting automatic ice — There is no ice maker and no water connection on a cabinet of this class.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Frost insulating the plate — First. It builds steadily on a cabinet with no defrost system, and the top box is the first thing to lose performance.
- A dial set for chilling rather than freezing — Second. One control serves both jobs, so a setting that is right for milk is often not enough for a tray.
- Door openings in a warm room — Third. A small cabinet loses its cold air quickly and the box pays first.
- Tray depth and seating — Fourth. The trays supplied are often deep plastic that stands clear of the cold surface - a shallow metal tray in contact freezes far faster.
- A cabinet not reaching temperature at all — Last, and it overrides everything: fix the cooling first.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Compact cabinets are light enough to be carried by one person and heavy enough to hurt when they tip - empty it before moving it. The compressor and relay at the back stay live until the unit is unplugged, and the cooling plate must never be chipped with anything metal.
When to call a technician
Call only if the whole cabinet cannot get cold. A box that will not freeze inside an otherwise cold fridge is a setting, a frost layer or a tray, and none of those needs a visit. If the cabinet is failing generally, be aware that spare parts for house-brand compacts can be hard to source, so ask about parts availability before agreeing to any repair.
