The short answer
There is nothing exotic inside a compact house-brand cabinet, so the noises are the ordinary ones: the shell, the surface it stands on and the compressor mounts. Where it is standing matters far more than what is inside it.
What you actually see and hear
- A hum that is only a problem at night — Low background noise rather than a loud fridge. Placement and a mat are the fix.
- A buzz that changes when you touch the cabinet — Vibration into a desk, a floor or a wall.
- A rattle from the back while the compressor runs — A loose pan, tray or pipe against the shell.
- Clicking every few minutes with no run — The start circuit failing - the one genuine fault.
- NEAR MISS - a gurgle after it shuts off — Refrigerant settling. Universal and harmless.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- The surface it stands on — First. On a desk, a hollow floor or a shelf, a light cabinet couples directly into it, and the surface radiates far more sound than the fridge does.
- Proximity to walls and furniture — Second. Small cabinets get tucked into corners, which both amplifies the noise and starves the rear panel of the air it needs.
- Compressor grommets and a loose rear pan — Third. Ordinary ageing, and it arrives so gradually that nobody can say when it started.
- A cabinet that is not level — Fourth. Rocking on three feet is a very common and completely free fix.
- Start relay, overload or compressor — Last. It is the only one that means the cabinet is in trouble.
Check in this order, and why
- Put a hand on the cabinet and on the surface under it — Whichever is buzzing is the thing that needs attention.
- Move the cabinet onto the floor on a mat and listen again — It is the fastest way to identify a resonating desk or shelf.
- Check all four feet are on the ground — Rocking is the commonest noise cause of all.
- Listen for click-pause-click — One minute, and it separates nuisance from failure.

- Stand the cabinet on a dense mat on a solid floor — Getting it off a hollow desk or shelf usually solves a night-time hum outright.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Compact cabinets are light enough to be carried by one person and heavy enough to hurt when they tip - empty it before moving it. The compressor and relay at the back stay live until the unit is unplugged, and the cooling plate must never be chipped with anything metal.
When to call a technician
Call when the compressor clicks and does not run, which is the only fault-shaped noise on this page. Otherwise think hard about the economics before booking a visit: on a compact house-brand cabinet, a call-out plus a part can easily approach the price of a new one, and it is worth knowing that these are typically sold as seasonal stock without a dealer service network behind them.
