The short answer
On the AZC line the useful first fact about a warm cabinet is whether the compressor is still running. The matrix on this page is the definitive list for this family: three model numbers. If it is, the refrigerant circuit is almost certainly intact and the cold is being made but not delivered — which puts the fault in the air path and makes three of the four causes below owner-checkable.
Symptoms on these models
- A sheet of frost on the freezer rear wall — Ice forms a slab across the back panel instead of a thin even coat — the tell that airflow has already stopped.
- The fresh-food side warms before the freezer does — Butter and milk spoil while frozen food is still hard — the split that points at air transfer rather than refrigeration.
- The compressor never shuts off — A compressor that used to rest between cycles and now runs through the night is working against a target it cannot meet.
- Condensation or sweating inside the cabinet — Warm humid air is being held at a temperature where it gives up moisture instead of freezing it out.
- The back of the unit is unusually hot to the hand — Heat that normally dissipates across the coil is being trapped, and the cabinet pays for it.
- NEAR MISS — the unit is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power, start-relay or compressor fault and it is a different page; this one assumes the unit runs.
Causes, most likely first on the AZC line
- Evaporator fan motor failure — First on the AZC line because the evaporator fan carries the highest duty cycle of any moving part in the cabinet and lives in the wettest, coldest place in it. That combination is what wears bearings out.
- Stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator — Second because it produces the identical complaint with one visible difference: a stalled defrost leaves a slab of ice on the rear panel, and a dead fan leaves the coil clean.
- Air damper or door seal leaking into the cabinet — Third: a damper stuck shut starves the fresh-food side while the freezer stays cold, and a tired gasket loads the whole cabinet with humid room air.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Last, deliberately. The three causes above are cheaper, commoner and checkable without tools; this one ends in a quote rather than a repair.
The check order on these models
- Hold the freezer door switch in and listen for moving air — This is the single point that feeds both compartments, so it goes first.
- Look behind the freezer rear panel for ice — A clean coil with a dead fan and an iced coil with a live fan are two different repairs, and this look separates them.
- Watch the damper between the compartments if the freezer is cold and the fridge is not — Neither fan nor defrost explains a split like that; the air path between them does.
- Pull the unit out and inspect the condenser last — It goes last because a dusty coil rarely produces a completely warm cabinet on its own; it makes a marginal system worse.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The evaporator fan is wired through the door switch on purpose: if you hold that switch in to test the fan, keep your fingers clear of the blade and let go before reaching inside. Nothing on the sealed system is an owner job — the refrigerant circuit is under pressure and is licensed work.

The service-call line
The condition is simple on these models: if the fix needs the freezer emptied and the rear panel off, or any work on the refrigerant circuit, it is a service call. A frost slab you can see, a fan you cannot hear, or a coil you can vacuum are owner territory. Oil at the compressor, a burning smell, or a breaker that trips are reasons to stop and call the same day.
