The short answer
Amana ARTX owners usually report this as "it runs all the time and nothing is cold", and that phrasing is the diagnosis. Eight model numbers carry this family badge, and the matrix on this page is the list. A unit chasing a setpoint it cannot reach has lost airflow, not refrigerant, and the order below reflects that.
What you actually observe
- The cabinet is warm but the unit is clearly running — The compressor hum is there and the cabinet light works; the air inside is simply not cold.
- A sheet of frost on the freezer rear wall — Thick, uneven ice across the back panel rather than the fine even coat a healthy cabinet carries.
- The compressor never shuts off — It runs continuously without reaching setpoint — the same fault seen from the other side.
- Condensation or sweating inside the cabinet — Beads of water on the underside of shelves and on the door liner, which is the cabinet sitting above its dew point.
- The back of the unit is unusually hot to the hand — A condenser that cannot shed heat runs hot and drives head pressure up, which shows as poor cooling inside.
- NEAR MISS — the unit is silent and nothing is cold — Silence plus warmth is a start-device or compressor fault, and the checks on this page assume neither.
Ranked causes for these models
- Stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator — First on the ARTX line because a defrost circuit fails progressively: the heater or the control drops out on some cycles and not others, so ice accumulates faster than it clears and the owner sees the consequence long before the cause.
- Evaporator fan motor failure — Second, and it is the cause most often mistaken for the first: no air moves, the cabinet warms, but the evaporator stays clean because nothing has stopped the defrost cycle.
- Condenser coil or condenser fan choked — Third because it is an installation fault rather than a component fault. A coil packed with dust behind a unit pushed hard against a wall degrades cooling on any cabinet, and nothing about the models in the matrix changes that.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Last. It is rare relative to the three above, it needs licensed refrigerant work, and nothing about the ARTX line makes it more likely than the airflow causes.
What to check first, second, third
- Hold the freezer door switch closed and listen — A fan you can hear removes one of the two likeliest causes immediately, and it needs nothing but a hand.
- Look for a frost slab on the freezer rear panel — If the fan runs and the rear wall is iced over, the defrost circuit is the fault and the airflow is a symptom of it.
- Feel the condenser area for trapped heat and lint — Only worth doing once the two above are clean, because a choked coil degrades cooling slowly rather than killing it.
- Leave a thermometer in a glass of water on the middle shelf overnight — What the cabinet actually holds is worth more to a technician than any reading on the door panel.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening anything; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Empty the cabinet before moving it — a loaded refrigerator is heavy enough to injure someone on a hard floor — and keep the door switch intact rather than taping it closed to run a test.

The service-call line
Call once the owner-side checks above come back clean, and call immediately if the fault is on the sealed system. The line on the ARTX line is the rear panel: everything in front of it is inspection, and everything behind it needs the cabinet emptied and the evaporator exposed. Call without waiting if you smell burning, see oil around the compressor, or the unit trips the breaker.
