The short answer
When the AFB refrigerators stops making ice, the fault is usually in front of the maker rather than inside it. On these models a frozen fill tube is the first thing this page would have you rule out. All but one of the causes below can be settled without a technician.
What you observe on these models
- The cubes are hollow, small or half formed — A partial fill is a flow problem, not a maker problem.

Causes, most likely first on this family
- Fill tube frozen at the mould — Thawing it is a temporary repair, because whatever made the overshoot will make another plug. Ranked first here: the commonest of the four on this family. This family is a single build, so it holds across the line.
- Freezer not cold enough to start a harvest — An ice maker will not harvest until the mould reaches its cut-in temperature, so a freezer running warm makes no ice and reports no error. Second, because it produces almost the same complaint from a different part.
- Supply line kinked or the shut-off barely open — A saddle valve that was only ever cracked open passes enough water for a glass and not enough for a fill cycle. Third, because the two above account for most of what arrives with this complaint.
- Harvest heater open circuit — Left alone it strips the module gears, so the noise is worth acting on rather than living with. Last on this page: real, but uncommon on these cabinets.
- Body: Against the brand-wide order, installation and loading causes move up here and wear causes move down: one build means a narrow spread of ages in service, so how the cabinet was put in matters more than how long it has run.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the point where the fill tube enters the mould for a plug of ice. — It leads: the ranking puts this cause first, so its check goes first too.
- Leave a thermometer in the freezer overnight and read it before the door is opened. — It sits here because it rules a cause in rather than out, which saves a step later.
- Pull the appliance out, follow the line for a kink and check the shut-off is fully open. — Last, because it confirms what the checks above have already narrowed.
Before you take a panel off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the door switch wired as it is: it cuts power to the evaporator fan for a reason. Shut the water supply off before disturbing the valve or the fill line, and never thaw a fill tube with a flame or a heat gun.
