The short answer
Most of the noises reported on the ABB refrigerators come from four places, and separating them is a matter of timing rather than of tools. On these models a loose rear panel is the first thing this page would have you rule out. Most of the causes below are owner checks; the last of them is not.
What you observe on these models
- A rattle from the back that stops when the compressor stops — The timing places it on the condenser side.
- A low hum that is louder in the next room than in the kitchen — Structure-borne noise travels; airborne noise does not.
- A short whirr or click a few times a day — Scheduled noises belong to controls.
- NEAR MISS — a hiss together with a chemical smell — Stop, disconnect the appliance and call a technician.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Loose rear panel or condenser shroud — This is the commonest noise after a service visit, because a panel screw went back in the wrong hole or did not go back at all. First, because it accounts for every observable above without needing a second fault. The masked positions are trim rather than mechanism, so it holds across the line.
- Condenser fan blade fouled or out of balance — A bent blade gives a deeper whirr rather than a rattle, and it will wear out the motor bearing if it is left. It ranks second — the fault the first check leaves standing.
- Supply tubing pressed against the cabinet — A fill line clipped tight to the cabinet carries the compressor hum straight into the wall behind it. Third: a real cause on these cabinets, but a less frequent one.
- Compressor mounts hardened with age — The sound is a low drone that is loudest in the room next door, and that is what tells you it is structural rather than mechanical. Last, which is exactly why the checks above are worth spending first.
- Body: The departure is installation over wear: the starred positions separate colour and trim, not mechanism or vintage, so the fleet ages as one and fitting faults lead.
Check in this order, and why
- Cut the power and go round the rear panel and shroud fixings with a nut driver. — First, because it settles the top of the ranking before anything else is touched.
- Cut the power, take the rear cover off and turn the condenser fan by hand, feeling for roughness and for anything caught in the shroud. — Next, once the check above has come back clean.
- Follow the water line from the valve to the cabinet and free it from anything it is pressed against. — Last, so that nothing further is spent until the cheaper checks are exhausted.
Before you take a panel off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the door switch wired as it is: it cuts power to the evaporator fan for a reason. Do not reach into a running fan to find a noise. Cut the power, turn the blade by hand, and refit the panel before powering up.

When to call a technician
A noise you can place — a loose panel, a pan out of its rails, a cabinet off its feet — is an owner fix. One from inside the freezer or from the compressor is not. Disconnect and call for any burning smell.
