The short answer
A new noise on the TAW line is usually a mounting or contact problem rather than a failing part: a case in contact with a wall or a cupboard makes the neighbour rattle and starves the condenser at the same time. Most of what follows can be tested in minutes without a tool. The order below puts the cabinet touching a wall or furniture first and a worn fan bearing last, and that order is the point of the page.
What the owner actually sees
- A continuous whine while air is moving — It tracks the fan rather than the compressor and stops when the fan does.
- A buzz that you can feel through the case — Felt as much as heard, and it changes if you rest a hand on a panel.
- The unit walks slightly over time — It ends up a finger further from the wall each week, which is vibration finding a path out.
- NEAR MISS - a hum with a burning smell — Isolate it and stop. A hot electrical smell is not something to diagnose by ear.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- The cabinet touching a wall or furniture — Ranked first on this line: a case pressed against a wall, a cupboard or another appliance transmits vibration directly into it, and the second object rattles at its own frequency. That rattle is what gets reported, not the compressor.
- Contents and baskets vibrating — It deserves a place in the ranking rather than a footnote: it is the single commonest explanation for a new noise in a unit that has not changed otherwise.
- Resonance through the surface it stands on — Then: the tell is that the noise is much louder in one room, or one position, than it was in another, with nothing about the unit changed.
- A worn fan bearing — Last, and the reason the order matters: a bearing that has dried out whines or rumbles continuously while the fan runs, and unlike a fouled blade it does not change when the obstruction is cleared, because there is none. It is the first of the genuinely mechanical causes.
Working order, and the reason for it
- Pull the unit clear of everything it touches — Pull it a hand-width from the wall and from anything beside it, then listen. A noise that halves has been telling you about the contact, not the machine.
- Run the unit empty for a minute — Refill in stages and listen after each. The item that brings the noise back is the one to separate from the wall or the rail.
- Change what it stands on — Put a dense mat or a slab of board under the unit and listen again. A large change in level from that alone identifies the surface as the amplifier.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the machinery bay contains both the electrics and sealed pipework that should not be levered or bent.

Where owner work ends
Call once stance, load, panels, clearance and the surface have all been excluded and the noise is still there, because what remains is inside the machinery bay. Call immediately for a burning smell, a trip, or a noise that arrived together with a warming cabinet.
